50 Lepta, 1901 - Silver Coin by Cretan State

In today's silver show off I have another greek small coin although this one was issued by the Cretan state in 1901, about 10 years before the island of Crete officially became a part of Greece:

The front side reads
for "Prince George of Greece, high commissioner of Crete 1901" and features a portrait of Prince George of Greece and Denmark.

The backside reads ΚΡΗΤΙΚΗ ΠΟΛΙΤΕΙΑ 50 ΛΕΠΤΑ for "Cretan State 50 Lepta (cents)" and features a crowned coat of arms.

A relatively small piece, 2.5 g of 0.835 silver:

Small but sexy XD

Due to the hole and the relatively poor condition I got it for pretty much spot price. Not bad :D

Quick Specs

  • Issuer: Crete (Greece)
  • Composition: Silver (.835)
  • Weight: 2.5 g
  • Diameter: 18 mm

More precious coins and shit

Piece of Jewelry you wear with a chain around your neck. What do you guys call it in your country? You can wear this coin in the same way because I am pretty sure a chain will go right through that hole.

Ahhh I see. Dunno if we have a special babe here, I just call it "hole". However we also used these holes to hang them on old traditional clothes :D

I have noticed that there are a lot of holes in the coins you collect. Is that a trend or is it because it's cheaper because of the hole?

A small but still a nice piece of silver.
Say, didn't Crete go bust a some years ago and got "Bailed in" by Brussels?

Interesting "multinational" theme there. It's faint from wear, but I'm pretty sure the crowned coat-of-arms is actually that of Denmark (3 lions on a shield) which also is in keeping with the portrait of Prince George. He was married to Marie Bonaparte, a distant relative of Napoleon.

Yes, I'm also a bit of a coin geek, but more from the collectible than the bullion perspective.

=^..^=
