Who Are These Characters? [CCC's Street Art Contest #159]

avatar

Good morning!

On my last holidays I visited Melide, a town in Galicia, situated along the Caminho de Santiago (St. James Way).

While I was there I found a couple of good murals, right at the walls of the community sports centre.

This is my entry for the CCC's Street Art Contest #159, hosted by @digi-me.

This was the first one and at the time I had no idea who it is. After some digging on the Internet, I found that this mural represents a Spanish poet named Rosalía de Castro. She seems to be a great deal in Galicia, even though I had never heard about her before.

The mural gives a lot of colour to the area and it's located right in front of a small basketball court.

At the front of the same building there was another piece, which, judging by the look, must have been painted by the same artist: Lidia Cao - a local Graffiti artist born in Santiago de Compostela, just 50 km away from here...

Here's a frontal view of the building....

This second piece was not strange to me. It can only be one person, the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. His appearance is unmistakable. I immediately recognised him. It put a smile on my face seeing his mural in the neighbourly country. Eheh! 😊

Sources say Rosalía de Castro was very important in the establishment of the Literary Galician Language... whereas Fernando Pessoa did the same for Portuguese. He's one of our best and most known poets. Every kid has to read his works from early on, at school. I'm guessing the same happens in Galicia with Rosalía's poems.

The idea of placing murals from both of these poets almost side my side is a great one. After all, many people consider these to be two variants from the same language.

As a final bonus for this post, I leave you with a completely unrelated work which I found on a nearby street. Since this ain't good enough for a separate post, here it is...

I hope you enjoyed these shots. See you next time!

Bringing poets to life through mural art a nice way for people to learn more about the history in the region.

Works of poetry carry lost times in social behaviour through words, poetry during this period was highly sought after.

Thanks for links to learn more.
