The Sumilon Marine Reserve, which was formed in 1974, protects thousands of fragile coral reefs and lush seagrass meadows, which are home to a diverse range of marine life. This reserve comprises additional maritime regions around Sumilon Island and is also responsible for Whale Shark conservation

Trivia time

Sumilon Island receives its name from the Filipino word sumilong, which means "to take refuge." Sumilon Island is named after the fact that it used to be a safe haven for fishermen fleeing the Philippines' frequent typhoons.
Sumilon Marine Reserve is the Philippines' first marine park.

What is the location of Sumilon Island?

Sumilon Island is a small island off the coast of Cebu, just north of Dumaguete.

What is the best way to get there?

Take a bus going for Oslob from Cebu City's South Bus Station and get off in front of Brumini Resort. Travel time is approximately 3 hours.

Tip #1: Although the rate is P1500 per boat, the boat is not exclusively yours, therefore you can always ask to ride with other visitors to save money.

Tip #2: Don't be persuaded by locals who claim that other passengers may refuse to share the boat. Ask around and keep an eye out for other visitors.

Tip #3: When returning to Brumini Resort from Sumilon Island, you can take a different boat. There's no need to wait for other passengers or for the same boat that took you there to become available.

Tip # 4: In Sumilon Island, islanders pay a P50 environmental fee and another P30 for the use of the toilet and bath. You can save P30 by changing into your beach clothes at Brumini Resort.

Tip # 5: The best time to visit Sumilon Island is between 2 and 4 p.m. during low tide. During those hours, there will also be fewer people, so you will almost certainly have the place to yourself.

Tip # 6: Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you hydrated while admiring the island's natural beauty. Just don't forget to take out your trash. When you return to Brumini Resort, pack them and dispose of them.
