Traveling the World #344 - Hakodate Magistrate's Office @ Hakodate, Japan

Hi Everyone,

Located inside Hakodate Goryokaku, you can see the Magistrate's Office in the middle of the fort. It is a large building with traditional Japanese architecture with lots of history and stories for the city. Back in the Edo period, it is the administrative centre of the city and it is an important part of the history of Hakodate. Although the building is situated inside the fort, the building is stand alone away from all the rest of the attractions. The gravel stones bring out the beauty of the building as we walked closer.

After consulting with the kids, they weren’t interested in going into the building. There is an entry fee for both adults and kids and there are certain rules you need to keep when visiting. You will also need to remove your shoes as you walk around the building to preserve the structure from the hard walking shoes.

From what we understood from the information outside, the office also has a museum that displays ancient items and historical documents related to the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration. You can learn about the culture, traditions, and way of life of the people of Hokkaido back in the old days. The museum has a large collection of swords, armor, pottery, and textiles that give you an insight into the past.

We have noticed many visitors didn’t go into the building but rather walk around it and take pictures as the building itself was tall and grand for us to take many photos from various angles. The office also put up small signs for visitors to stand at particular spots to get the best pictures of the building.

It is a place you must take a photo of the building if you are visiting Hakodate Goryokaku from different angles. Remember to wear some comfy shoes as walking on the gravel stones is not fun with heels. A note is there is a clean public toilet next to the building which is great after a few hours of exploring the park and surroundings.
