The Skin I Live In tells the story of Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) a renowned surgeon who lives in the Cigarral, a rather secluded mansion that was not only his home but it also had personal operating rooms and even his own laboratory. In this mansion he has a young woman prisoner with whom he is experimenting with a synthetic skin that he is developing, although the proposal of the synthetic skin was rejected by his superiors, he still decided to test it on a human and that's why he deprived the young woman of her freedom, the experiment was a success though, the young woman did not feel any pain even when he exposed her to fire. The young girl named Vera Cruz (Elena Anaya) is always looking for a way to get out of there, she tries in many ways but without success, but she never resigns herself, she is determined to get out of there motivated by the idea of being able to see her mother and recover her life. The one in charge of watching over Vera is an older woman named Marilia (Marisa Paredes), a faithful employee who works for the doctor. Although Marilia knows that what Robert is doing is not right, she supports him unconditionally. Things get complicated and bad things happen putting everything at risk. There is a very murky truth hidden in the past of these three that little by little is unveiled and someone is going to end up dead. Who is the one that is going to live?

La Piel que Habito cuenta la historia de Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) un reconocido cirujano que vive en el Cigarral, una mansión bastante apartada que no solo era su hogar sino que también tenía quirófanos personales y además su propio laboratorio. En esta mansión el tiene prisionera a una joven con la que está experimentando con una piel sintética que el mismo está desarrollando, aunque la propuesta de la piel sintética fue rechazada el aun así decidió probarla en un humano y por eso privó a esa joven de su libertad, el experimento fue todo un éxito, la joven no sentía dolor ni cuando él la exponía al fuego. La joven llamada Vera Cruz (Elena Anaya) siempre busca la manera de salir de alli, lo intenta de muchas manera pero sin éxito, pero jamás se resigna, ella está determinada a salir de allí motivada con la idea de poder ver a su madre y recuperar su vida. La encargada de vigilar a Vera es una mujer mayor llamada Marilia (Marisa Paredes) una fiel empleada que trabaja para el doctor. Aunque Marilia sabe que lo que Robert está haciendo no es correcto ella lo apoya incondicionalmente. Las cosas se complican y ocurren cosas que no debían pasar poniendo todo en riesgo. Hay una verdad muy turbia oculta en el pasado de estos tres que poco a poco se va desvelando y alguien va a terminar muerto. ¿Saldrá alguien vivo de esta historia?

Something unique happened to me with this movie, my parents had bought it along with the first Blu-ray that I still have so long ago that I don't remember the exact date, the thing is that as I knew that the movie was in Spanish (and I don't usually like them) from the first moment I discarded it, and it was lying there for years. My mom had seen it and told me that it was "terrible" so my desire to see it (which was already close to zero) went to a negative number, but recently I noticed that I had already seen many of the movies I own more than once and I really wanted to see something new, so I came across with this movie once again and without much desire I put it on, without expecting anything to be honest. To my surprise I came across with a very but VERY DISTURBING story, it is one of the most twisted stories I have ever seen, every time they unveil something that seems unpleasant they manage to make it even more disgusting and unnerving. The story is not predictable, only few things were obvious to me and even having a negative oriented imagination this movie took it to the next level effortlessly, it was simply a very sick story.

Me pasó algo singular con esta película, mis padres la habían comprado junto con el primer Blu-ray que aún tengo hace ya tanto tiempo que no recuerdo la fecha exacta, la cosa es que como sabía que la película era en español y no suelen gustarme, entonces desde el primer momento descarte esa película y estuvo por allí por años, mi mamá la había visto y me comentó que era "malísima" así que mis ganas de verlas que ya eran cercanas a cero pasaron a un número negativo, pero hace poco noté que ya había visto muchas de las películas más de una vez y realmente quería ver algo nuevo, me topé una vez más con esta película y sin muchas ganas la coloqué, sin esperar nada la verdad. Para mí sorpresa me encontré con una historia muy pero MUY PERTURBADORA, es una las historias más torcidas que he visto, cada vez que desvelan algo que parece desagradable se las arreglan para hacerlo aún más asqueroso y desconcertante. La historia no es predecible, solo pocas cosas fueron obvias para mí y aún teniendo una imaginación orientada a lo negativo está película lo llevaba al siguiente nivel sin ningún esfuerzo, fue siemplemente una historia muy enfermiza.

Beyond the performances of which I have no complaints, what hooks and at the same time gives some disgust is the amount of secrets, ulterior motives, traumas and how the story itself unfolds. I must admit that some sequences of the scenes where they jumped from what was happening in the present to what happened in the past, I didn't like it and were somewhat confusing to be honest. The scene changes are so abrupt that I can easily say without fear of being wrong, that more than one person stopped watching the film in some of these transitions, because at no time comes out something like "3 years ago" or something similar, the scene just jumps without any warning and after a moment is that you understand that it is something that happened before, that was very disconcerting and I would say that was what I did not like about this film. However, no matter how shady the story was and everything, I must say that it might be the best movie I have seen in Spanish.

Más allá de las actuaciones de las cuales no tengo quejas, lo que engancha y a la vez da algo de asco es la cantidad de secretos, segundas intenciones, traumas y como se desarrolla la historia en sí. Debo admitir que algunas secuencias de las escenas donde saltaban de lo que estaba sucediendo en la actualidad a lo que sucedió en el pasado, no me gustaron y fueron algo confusas la verdad. Los cambios de escenas son tan brusco que fácilmente puedo decir sin temor a equivocarme, que más de una persona dejó de ver la película en alguna de estas transiciones, porque en ningún momento sale algo tipo "Hace 3 años" o algo por el estilo, la escena solo salta sin ningún aviso y después de un momento es que se entiendes que es algo que sucedió antes, fue muy desconcertante y diría que eso fue lo que no me gustó de este filme. Sin embargo sin importar esto por más turbia que fue la historia y todo debo decir que puede que sea la mejor película que he visto en español.

I must highlight the performance of Elena Anaya as Vera Cruz, not only is she a very beautiful woman but from my point of view she owned her role in its entirety, it was a pleasant surprise to find such a good actress in a Spanish language film; once you know the background of everything you understand much better many of the attitudes and actions of this character. I consider she was the best of all this production as well as Antonio Banderas, which in my case is the first time I saw this actor playing a role of this type, I loved to see him in a different role for a change, but still my favorite is definitely Elena, I had never seen her act before and did not know about her, but after seeing her in this movie I even did some research about her and I was surprised to see that she did not really have so much experience as an actress and still did a commendable job playing a character as complex as Vera.

Debo resaltar la actuación de Elena Anaya con el personaje principal femenino Vera Cruz, no solo es una mujer muy hermosa sino que desde mi punto de vista ella se adueñó de su papel en su totalidad, fue una grata sorpresa encontrar a una actriz tan buena en una película de habla española; una vez que se sabe el transfondo de todo se entienden mucho mejor muchas de las actitudes y acciones de este personaje. Considero que ella fue la mejor de todas en está producción al igual que Antonio Banderas, que en mi caso es la primera vez que veía a este actor interpretando un papel de este tipo, me encantó verlo en un rol distinto para variar, pero aún así mi favorita es definitivamente Elena, jamás la había visto actuar y no sabía nada de ella, pero después de verla es esta película hasta investigué un poco sobre ella y me sorprendió ver que no tenía realmente tanta experiencia como actriz y aún así hizo un encomiable trabajo interpretando a un personaje tan complejo como Vera Cruz.

Talking a bit more about the transactions in this movie besides being abrupt, at least they are quite explicit and no matter how abrupt they were I think it was something necessary, because without them nothing could have been understood. I still don't understand why they decided to put it that way but there is nothing to do about it anymore. If I focus on the positive I would say that I liked the fact that the movie didn't feel like a scene from a telenovela which is what I usually feel it happens in Spanish movies, like that kind of emptiness and heaviness that there is always present in movies of this type. I also liked that I didn't feel that any of the actors were exaggerating their roles, this is something I hate and is more common in Spanish speaking actors and mainly what I enjoyed most of all was that despite being a somewhat complex and grotesque story to some extent, they did manage to get it all across perfectly which was vital.

Hablando un poco más de las transacciones de esta película además de ser bruscas por lo menos son bastante explícitas y sin importar que tan abruptas hayan sido fueron un mal necesario, porque sin ellas no se habría podido entender nada, aún así sigo sin entender porque ocurrieron de esa manera pero ya no hay nada que hacer al respecto. Si me enfoco en lo positivo diría que me gustó el hecho de que la película no se sintió como la escena de una telenovela que es lo que suelo sentir que sucede en las películas de habla española, como esa especie de vacío y pesadez que hay en las películas de este tipo. También me gustó que no sentí que ninguno de los actores estuviera exagerando su papel, esto es algo que odio y es más común en los actores de habla hispana y principalmente lo que más disfruté de todo fue que a pesar de ser una historia algo compleja y grotesca hasta cierto punto, si se las arreglaron para que se entendiera todo a la perfección lo que resultó vital.

The psychological part of this movie is quite strong to say the least, it gets to a point where you wonder what the hell was the person who wrote this thinking? like seriously? It can be too (like I said several times before) much for most viewers I'm pretty sure of that, I think no matter how much you like twisted things this story is just too much, once again I must say it is over the top shady, wacky, sick and without a doubt very elaborate. If you decide to see this movie you will understand why I insist so much in saying that it exceeds the standards of what can be considered disturbing, it is a story that even if you do not like it you will not forget and I could say that for that simple fact it is worth watching it.

La parte psicológica de esta película es bastante fuerte por decir lo menos, llega a un punto donde te preguntas ¿en qué demonios estaba pensando la persona que escribió esto? porque puede llegar a ser demasiado (como ya he mencionado anteriormente varias veces) para la mayoría, creo que no importa que tanto gusto tengas por las cosas retorcidas esta historia es simplemente demasiado, una vez más debo decir que es exageradamente turbia, descabellada, enfermiza y sin lugar a dudas muy elaboradas. Si se deciden a ver esta película entenderán porque insisto tanto en decir que supera mucho los estándares de lo que puede llegar a considerarse perturbador, es una historia que aunque no te guste no podrás olvidar y podría decir que por ese simple hecho vale la pena verla.

I think you must see it, it's a movie you have to give at least a chance, I wouldn't watch it again if I'm honest but I must say I hated it and loved it at the same time because although it was very good the story is crazy and only positive thing is how elaborate it is, the bad thing is that it can get to be TOO MUCH, too many things to process and if you are like me that put yourselves in the place of each character it's not a very pleasant experience, 'cause each one has its complex/sick touch where traumas and regrets get the best of them. Basically it's a movie to watch once to enjoy it or be disgusted by it. I wouldn't compare it with any other movie I thought it was original enough, I hope you are encouraged to watch it, I fully recommend it if you have EVERYTHING I wrote in mind.

Pienso que si deben verla, es una película que hay que darle por lo menos una oportunidad, yo no la vería otra vez si soy sincero, pero debo decir que me sucedió el típico amor/odio con esta película, porque aunque fue muy buena la historia es una locura y lo único es lo elaborada que es, lo malo es que puede llegar a ser DEMASIADO, son simplemente demasiadas cosas que procesar y si son como yo que se colocan en el lugar de cada personaje puedo afirmar que fue una experiencia muy agradable, porque cada uno de ellos tiene su toque complejo/enfermizo donde los traumas y arrepentimientos se llevan lo mejor de ellos. Básicamente es una película para verla una vez y disfrutarla y quedar asqueado a la vez, no la compararía con ningún otro film me pareció lo suficientemente original, espero te animes a verla, la recomiendo completamente si tienes TODO lo que escribí en cuenta.
