MOVIE REVIEW: ENOLA HOLMES (2020)
Hearing the name Holmes, surely the first thought that comes to our minds is a character from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes. The Sherlock Holmes we know is a detective who is very skilled in solving cases, a detective who has a partner who is no less genius named Dr. Watson and always succeeded in finding a common thread in every mystery.
Much different from the case solving stories like in the previous series, Enola Holmes, is a very new character created by Nancy Springer, taking a younger timeline.
As the name suggests, Enola Holmes is the sister of Sherlock Holmes. Although in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings there is no Enola name in the Sherlock family register and only Mycrot's name. However, according to the author's narrative, he borrowed the names of the two Holmes characters to create a fresh new work that is still related to the detective world.
What Does Enola Look Like?
Growing up with single parents, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) was brought up by her mother, Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonham Carter). Enola's father died when Enola was a baby, while her two older brothers, Sherlock Holmes (Hendry Cavill) and Mycroft Holmes (Sam Claflin) chose to leave their home when they were adults.
Enola is a name that comes from a play on the word 'Alone'. According to the narrative of Enola's character in the film, her mother was very adamant about giving her the name Enola. It wasn't meant to make Enola alone forever, however, her mother was sure that Enola could even be great even on her own.
Since childhood, Enola only lived with her mother and caregivers. Enola was educated to be good at jujutsu - a branch of martial arts -, archery, concocting various chemical experiments, and Enola was taught what her mother loved the most: solving the mysteries of words. this is what then became the expertise of Enola Holmes in solving cases. Password cracker.
However, the adventure begins when Enola wakes up on the morning of her sixteenth birthday and realizes that her mother is missing.
Enola's nanny was only left with a box containing a card with a picture of a chrysanthemum as a birthday present for Enola. Feeling left out, Enola called her two brothers to come home and help her find their mother.
However, the return of her two brothers was far from the impression Enola wanted. Instead of getting sympathy and attention, Enola was treated unpleasantly, especially from her eldest brother, Mycroft.
Meanwhile, Sherlock, as expected, considers the loss of his mother a case to be solved. He thought there was a riddle that his mother left behind, and that there must be a reason why her mother left the house.
Disappointed with her two older siblings who seem unwilling to help Enola find her mother, finally, Enola who knows nothing about the outside world decides to go on her own adventure and goes to London with all the puzzles in the box her mother left as a birthday present.
Feminist Message
Mycroft Holmes is an older brother who objected to Enola's condition, which seemed very disorganized and seemed chaotic for a 19th century British teenager.
Mycroft was surprised that his mother had not taught Enola things about good speech and polite behavior like other noble girls. Mycroft took the initiative to enroll Enola into a girls' school for the sake of his sister's future. However, Enola felt that school of conduct would not suit her. Enola believes that life is her own, and she can decide how her life goes. So, in the registration process that Enola disapproved of, she decided to leave the house and make the girl a fugitive from her own family.
Mycroft sends a private detective to catch his sister and bring her home.
An Evolving and Not Boring Story
From the beginning of the story, I thought this story was only about solving the mystery of their mother's disappearance and how to find her. However, it turned out that I was wrong.
In a quarter of the film, the main character meets a useless young man from the Tewksbury tycoon named Viscount. Cleverly played by Louis Partridge, the Viscount encounters Enola on her escape in the train that takes them to London.
At first, Enola refused the Viscount's presence because his presence interfered with Enola's escape. However, when Enola realized that the Viscount's life was in serious danger and there was an assassin trying to kill the Viscount, Enola finally reluctantly helped the Viscount escape from the assassin's pursuit.
From here the story then turns towards the Tewksbury family. Enola and Viscount then attempt to solve the mystery of the mastermind behind the assassins who followed the Viscount.
At first, they assumed that it was the Viscount's uncle who wanted him dead because then the property and inheritance of the Tewksbury family would pass to his uncle. However, at the end of the story there was an interesting conclusion that Enola and the Viscount came to.
Millie Bobby Brown, who takes on the main character as well as a producer, must have carefully considered that this series would be a new breakthrough for teenagers to get to know the clever detectives of the Holmes family.
In addition to the mystery adventure story. Enola Holmes also does not forget an important aspect in the story of teenagers.
The romantic story that is very thinly woven between Enola and the Viscount bears very sweet fruit. Until the end of the story, I was made excited by the chemistry of both. This is what makes me impatient for the next series audience.
How did the story of the two develop? How are the other mysteries that Enola will solve? how her intelligence was growing day by day considering that Enola had just turned 16 years old. Of course, the older you get, the more mature Enola's character will be like her brother, Sherlock Holmes.
Interesting Perspective
Enola Holmes uses the first person point of view as the narrator. This means that Enola as the actor also invites the audience to participate in interacting and as if the audience is also invited to think about solving the mystery.
This method is certainly not new in the world of cinema, but it has always been a unique idea because it is rarely used.
Succeeded in getting awards and being included in several nominations, I think Enola Holmes is worth watching in your spare time.
Thank you for reading my review.
Hi, I am the child of the universe, I like to read books with various genres. I was born in the city of batik but can't draw batik yet. I want to be a novelist, but my works are only short poems that are included in anthology books.
