Should we fight against AI or just join in accepting it? Why are you here? | A bit of my thoughts

Hello everyone!

I have to admit that I'm liking this community quite a bit, mostly in a personal way as I'm slowly starting to talk about more topics outside of my comfort zone (Cof, cof, gaming). And since lately I've been surfing the depths of Hive and reading quite a few posts outside of my favorite communities, I've noticed that there's a tendency to talk about this topic, which at least for me, is a bit cliché: Artificial Intelligence.

If you don't want to read my whole position on this, in short, I will just say that there is nothing we can do against this technology. It's basically the same situation we had when COVID came into our lives, we couldn't make it go away but we did learn to live with it in our lives.

But now talking in a deeper way:

We are screwed, but not in a bad way.

No matter how hard we try to fight against it, we simply cannot fight against a technology that is able to replicate even the way a user types not only within Hive, but basically anyone anywhere they have typed anything virtually. It is impossible to escape this, just as it is also impossible to constantly strive to know when something is "out of place".

I was recently really, really struck by the whole issue with @hivewatchers and their attempt to fight this technology, but in my opinion, it's more likely to get "false positives" than cases where an AI is actually being used to write an entire post. After all, who would really be encouraged to use this to create posts within Hive?

Not long ago @riverflows made a post with a totally accurate title, where he summarily said "If you use artificial intelligence to make your posts, you don't belong on Hive" --- And it's totally true.

As Hive users, why exactly are we here --- just to make posts? Personally, I find it rather stupid to start creating content thanks to ChatGPT after having invested so much time to learn how to write and layout posts. Not everyone who comes to Hive had a blog before, moreover, maybe they didn't even get to write this way ever in their life. So you'd rather throw away all that effort you made by simply using a tool that will make your job easier?

I don't deny at all that ChatGPT is an amazing tool, I mean, I daily use Deepl.com to translate into English all my publications and I am absolutely sure that this translator does a splendid job: After all, it is also artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is here to revolutionize a lot of things, but we also can't let greed cloud our judgment enough to forget a key aspect of what Hive offers us: A space to vent personally.

I'm someone who has been writing for years, obviously with ups and downs because I haven't had the ability to be consistent over the years, but at this point, it's impossible for me to deny that writing ends up being therapeutic in a way. I'm someone who usually plays a lot of video games and invests a lot of my day in it, and to be able to write about my experiences and share them with more people who are also interested in the same topic as I. Why would I want artificial intelligence to write for me, MY thoughts? It makes me feel quite strange to think that I spent a good time playing with my friends to end up using a tool to write for me my own thoughts.. wtf.

It's not right, by any means. It's not acceptable in Hive, it's not acceptable anywhere, and you shouldn't accept it as a thinking human being either. Let's just look at calculators: they are there and we can easily do math where we obviously do need help (like 5*9), but to TOTALLY rely on a calculator to do simple calculations? That's obviously something that no person does these days... and I think that's how we need to look at ChatGPT or something like that.

We can't let a machine do all the work for us, indeed, not even 60-50% of the work. As thinking human beings, we can't stop thinking or using our cognitive abilities for something as essential as writing, lol.

This is where I invite you to reflect, why are you here, to make content and get paid? If so, I'm afraid Hive is not the place for you and this post explains quite well why.

Personally, I don't think we can do anything to combat this, but as much as possible we can notice those little details that tell us when an author has a sudden change in the overall quality of their content in general, so I don't feel we should worry about this anymore either; people who really appreciate their communities will easily be able to identify when they are acting in bad faith.

And that's mostly it. Out there I read ideas about focusing a hell of a lot more on the social aspect of Hive for rewards instead of focusing on rewarding quality content, but this would be a total change to how Hive currently works, so talking about stopping rewarding posts is talking about a radical change to the entire workings of the blockchain.

For now, time is the only one that will be able to speak. We can only watch and wait to see how things progress, let's learn from our mistakes, as we have always done.

Thank you very much for reading all this.

Use ChatGPT to impress curators you did a good job typing a prompt or automate a process where people have an excuse to tip you by upvotes. I don't know why some people think writing informative articles on subjects other people can Google and find better information outside Hive will be a hit on Hive for viewership. I can just wiki most of the general information I need and Hive would be the least on the list to search the info I want. But if someone writes their life story made by someone I learned to care about, that is content I'd organically be interested in.

The question is do people really think using ChatGPT to impress curators doing manual curations would work on Hive?

If people wanted more social rewards, they'd start getting out of their comfort zone and seek out other people building their network. But that's too much work than pressing a few prompts so...

I don't mean to imply that talking about general topics is wrong, I would say that people usually have days where they say "Hey, I'd like to talk about gaming this year" and they can make a post about it, and it's interesting because you can also give your own opinion about it, but it must be painful to rely on an AI to share your thoughts on something so superficial. lol.

And yeah, it will be impossible for short-brained people to thrive on Hive when they depend on an AI. Good luck engaging when you can't use your brain to talk about things you like XD.

Lately it's come up as a few people posted about it and then there was a flood of everyone talking about it. Not so much cliche, just everyone talking about it the same week, which needs to happen every now and then. Great you joined in the conversation and thanks for referring to my post. I'm glad you liked it. It's a big conversation isn't it? I think we are all on the same page really - we want authenticity and transparency, not dishonestly for upvotes. Of course AI is a great tool, but nnot when you aren't doing the thinking, right?

It is also true that it is simply a very controversial topic and people like to talk about it. In the beginning, it was quite normal to see pessimistic opinions like "AIs will take over the platform", but being honest, I think we will end up noticing that in the end, it is not such a worrying danger. I definitely loved your post, maybe my post is even quite similar to yours haha.

Only time will tell how this will progress :) I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by.

No worries, it's nice to be here. I think our views about it have changed a little as we've used it and seen how it has developed, and the various ways in which people use it.

whether we want to or not. AI tech is here.

ChatGPT is informative that's for sure.

I classify AI as ...virtual assistants or ghostwriters.

I don't have strong opinion here. but I do have a negative opinion on people who use it as a replacement rather than as a compliment to one's work.

I mean look at Grammarly, it's a complimentary tool. but using ChatGPT to 'describe a banana in 500 words' and pasting it as an article. mannn... I don't like that.

I'm glad that you're enjoying the community here! It's been a fun one to start and manage. Sorry that it's been a while since you posted this, I was on holiday for a little bit!

I think AI is definitely going to be a significant battle for us not only on Hive but in many aspects of our lives. It can certainly supplement knowledge, as I saw something the other day where we can use it as a tool to gather a subset of different articles on a topic we are looking to write. So that acts a bit like an assistant than anything but to write whole posts, I think this is definitely something that's not going to go over well! I have found a few people here on Hive that are using AI to write their posts and I let them know that it's not acceptable and down voted it but it seems that they have changed their ways a little bit. Time will tell if that stays!

We will certainly need to keep our guard up for how we let AI come into our lives, it can be very dangerous as it is a filtered way of seeing things where we need less filters not more.
