What's Eating Gilbert Grape?/¿A quién ama Gilbert Grape? (Reseña/Review)
In a town called Endora, normally nothing happens, their only attraction may be the Grape family, who are said to have their mother too huge. In that family, the eldest son, Gilbert, takes care of his family's expenses by working in a store, while he has an affair with a married woman and protects his younger brother who has a mental disability.

I wanted to see this movie only because I was told that many were surprised that Leonardo Dicaprio could speak so well and move so normally at award ceremonies, because they came to believe that his performance as a mentally handicapped child was real. At 19 years old, this performance earned him his first Oscar nomination, which unfortunately he did not win that year, but still, he made an incredible character in a moving film.
The movie made me feel a lot of things to be honest, I didn't think it would affect me so much, it's a story that many might say is about brotherly love, an unrequited romance, love for family, and although it can being like this at first glance, something crossed my mind when I saw a specific scene, something that I wanted to write something later with that title that is "men cannot be wrong" they could have put it inadvertently because that fact is normal in some cases, but we see how on occasions, the protagonist wants to put everything aside to try to live his life, at least once in his many years of life.
The story, a lower-middle class family, tries to survive thanks to the sacrifice of their eldest son, the older sister takes care of the housework, the younger sister being old starts working in an ice cream parlor and the younger brother cannot even bathing alone, having an obese mother and a father who committed suicide in his own home. It is a chaotic situation where there are several moments of stress for the main character, having to be aware of his younger brother not to do something that endangers his own life and to satisfy his mother's hunger due to the depression of losing to her husband.
I like these kinds of stories where the protagonist is under a lot of pressure in different ways, that he looks human by reacting to them in a normal way, not like a robot that was created to be under moments of extreme stress. I think that for me, those were the most emotional moments, the moments of desperation of the protagonist, the pain that his brother showed just for not knowing how to bathe, the shame of his mother for not wanting to be seen, the stress of the older sister for having everything in her control and the hate of the younger sister for living those situations, for me, it is a movie that represents an average family.
I had many ideas of how the story could have ended, but honestly, it could have had a "happy ending" if seen in a positive light, but I was hopeful that it would end in a tragic, heart-breaking way that would make anyone cry by the end of it. to see it, I'm glad it ended like this because of the characters, but I'm disappointed because I wanted to continue feeling more emotions until the end.
Another rumor that I heard about this movie was that Johnny Depp apologizes to the actress that played his mother in every scene they had, this because of the looks that his character gives to the actress, being she is really obese, this could be an act generous on the part of the actor so as not to make her feel hated or belittled. Here, I saw these two great actors a few years ago, I was impressed by their performances and the story of the film itself, I love this film in several ways, one where the soundtrack, the costumes or even the photography, happens to be of background, because the important thing is its characters and its beautiful story, without a doubt, I recommend it.
