Today I want to share with you a very special chapter of my life, one that is full of emotions, laughter and tears. It is the day I finally saw my niece Amanda again, after more than a year of separation. This meeting was not only an opportunity to hug her again, but also the culmination of a bond that had been strengthened through video calls and shared memories from afar.

Cuando Amanda llegó a mi vida, tenía apenas un año. Desde ese momento, mi novio y yo decidimos que queríamos ser parte de su mundo, y durante un año y dos meses estuvimos viviendo con ella. Eran días llenos de juegos, risas y aventuras. Sin embargo, cuando llegó el momento de regresar a Venezuela, no podía imaginar lo difícil que sería separarme de aquella pequeña con quien había formado un lazo tan fuerte. When Amanda came into my life, she was just one year old. From that moment on, my boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to be part of her world, and for a year and two months we lived with her. Those were days full of games, laughter and adventures. However, when it was time to return to Venezuela, I could not imagine how difficult it would be to separate from that little girl with whom I had formed such a strong bond. The weeks went by as she grew up, and every time I was away I felt it in my heart.

Recuerdo que, dos semanas después de nuestra despedida, logré volver a hablar con ella por videollamada. Aquel momento fue triste. Con su voz inocente, Amanda me preguntó: "¿Cuándo vas a volver?". Las lágrimas comenzaron a brotar en mis ojos. Estaba lejos, pero le prometí que pronto estaríamos juntas de nuevo. Mientras comía, sus palabras calaron hondo en mis sentimientos: "Tía, ven a casa a comer con nosotras, aquí hay comida". En ese instante, mi corazón se rompió un poco más al recordar todas las comidas compartidas y los momentos que no podía vivir junto a ella justo en ese momento, pero todo esto debía suceder.

I remember that, two weeks after our farewell, I managed to speak to her again by video call. That moment was sad. In her innocent voice, Amanda asked me: "When are you coming back? Tears began to well up in my eyes. She was far away, but I promised her we would be together again soon. As I ate, her words struck deep into my feelings: "Auntie, come home and eat with us, there's food here". At that moment, my heart broke a little more as I remembered all the meals we had shared and the moments I could not experience with her right then and there, but it all had to happen.

Más de un año después, mi cuñada finalmente pudo emprender el viaje a Venezuela. Su hermano, mi pareja, fue a buscarlas en la frontera y las acompañó hasta Monagas, donde nos encontramos todos. Desde que supe que vendrían, estaba muy emocionada; había tenido que guardar este secreto por más de un mes y medio, lo cual fue una prueba de paciencia y autocontrol.

More than a year later, my sister-in-law was finally able to make the trip to Venezuela. Her brother, my partner, went to pick them up at the border and accompanied them to Monagas, where we all met. Since I knew they were coming, I was very excited; I had had to keep this secret for more than a month and a half, which was a test of patience and self-control.

El día del encuentro, decidí vestirme un poco más especial. Elegí una falda larga y un top blanco de algodón; quería que fuera un día memorable. La espera fue larga, especialmente porque el bus se demoró dos horas más de lo que habíamos planeado, pero la emoción no me permitía desistir. Cuando finalmente vimos el último bus llegar desde Santa Elena, corremos hacia en otro lado de la calle donde ellos bajarían del autobús.

On the day of the meeting, I decided to dress a little more special. I chose a long skirt and a white cotton top; I wanted it to be a memorable day. The wait was long, especially as the bus took two hours longer than we had planned, but the excitement wouldn't let me give up. When we finally saw the last bus arrive from Santa Elena, we ran to the other side of the street where they would get off the bus.

Y entonces, la voz de Amanda se escuchó desde dentro del bus: "¡Thalia!". La emoción me invadió; ella ya había visto a su tía desde dentro del bus. Sus abuelos estaban ansiosos por recibirla, y aunque mi corazón estaba repleto de ganas de abrazarla, sabía que debía esperar. La felicidad y la paciencia colmaron esos momentos, y cuando por fin la tuve en mis brazos, un gran abrazo nos unió y me dijo: "¡Mi hermana!". No pude evitar reírme ante su inocente afirmación. And then Amanda's voice rang out from inside the bus: "Thalia! Excitement washed over me; she had already seen her aunt from inside the bus. Her grandparents were anxious to greet her, and although my heart was bursting with the desire to hug her, I knew I had to wait. Happiness and patience filled those moments, and when I finally had her in my arms, a big hug brought us together and she said, "My sister! I couldn't help but laugh at her innocent statement. I knew that in her world, roles were sometimes mixed and, if she wanted, I could be her sister and her aunt at the same time.

Al llegar a casa, preparamos un pollito delicioso, pensando en que ellas llegarían con mucha hambre. Verla disfrutar de la comida y hablar sin parar era todo lo que había querido, ella es súper parlanchina y además hablaba en portugués y éramos pocos los que la entendíamos completamente . También me emocionó estar de nuevo con mi cuñada, compartimos risas, historias y nostalgia. Ana lucía tan linda, con sus trenzas que la hacían verse mucho más joven y luego se las quitó por estaban súper despeinadas.

When we got home, we prepared a delicious chicken, thinking that they would arrive very hungry. Seeing her enjoying the food and talking non-stop was everything I had wanted, she is super talkative and she spoke in Portuguese and there were few of us who understood her completely. I was also thrilled to be with my sister-in-law again, we shared laughter, stories and nostalgia. Ana looked so pretty, with her braids that made her look much younger and then she took them out because they were super tousled.

Reencontrarnos fue un recordatorio de que, aunque la distancia puede ser difícil, los lazos familiares nunca se rompen completamente. Gracias a estas experiencias aprendemos a valorar la compañía y apoyo de los familiares cercanos, también a aprovechar el tiempo junto a las personas que nos redean.

Reuniting was a reminder that, although distance can be difficult, family ties are never completely broken. Through these experiences we learn to value the company and support of close family members, as well as how to make the most of time with the people who are close to us.
