Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

Here We Go Again!

Of-course!

Okay really we do a lot of Ford Ranger transmissions, not the only ones but we do a lot of them!

Now here's the thing! We might do a lot of them but what we've noticed is the waves of the same jobs coming in time and again!

I'll get onto that topic a little later!

First let's rip it open and see what we can find in the belly of the beast!

OOOOOOOFFFFFFF! Some dark as hell ATF oil! Keep in mind that this oil needs to look blood red! Now we all know the cause of that! Boosted and tuned motors and the lack of servicing the transmissions!

Yeahp! FORD thinks they are lifetime builds! Legitly and seriously they do!

I'd get me one but servicing them can also be a pretty penny! The oil alone would cost you around R4000-R5000 (ZAR) that amounts to ($220-$260 USD) just for oil! Now it's cheaper for me who can actually do it myself! But meh!

Besides the oil the transmission doesn't look to be in too much of a bad condition actually! Let's go deeper!

We Knew When We Saw!

The moment we saw this we knew... we knew right off the bat that this was a pump break!

Now the thing is we have to still tear everything down! No idea how far that stuff went and what might have gotten damaged!

The pump well that is buggered all the way through to Texas! Thats for sure!

I pulled it all out and left it a bit so that it can... well drip dry so to speak! We didn't want so get legitly everything full of oil right!

Oh you can drip dry it for aslong as you want! Once you're done you'll just get another liter of oil dripping from some stack! That's almost always the case! But that's fine! It's a little less!

Even more teardown on these!

Yeahp! You guessed it! There's part inside the parts that I took out! Hella damn right!

Mostly clutch stacks and thrust washers/bearings! Bushes you name it! All of the goodies that come with everything!

Now for the deep inspection and then it's all down to the pump!

It doesn't look like it can be at fault right? Well I assure you it is!

Cracked up and torn down!

Hell guys! So the story here is simple! The engine was removed and when they refitted the engine they didn't make sure that the torque converter was back in the right place and they started her up!

Do I need to go further!?

Wellllll bammmmmm!

The Damage Is Immense!

There's a lot of things that broke by just making one simple and easily avoidable mistake!

One simple mistake that I feel people by now should know not to make! It's 2025 and likely 2/3 cars driving past you are automatic!

The pump gears, the pump casings, the front seal, the converter bush, the torque converter itself! Most likely we will need to replace the filter and all of the oil in the transmission! On top of that we still have no idea what happened to the valve body! Sheesh let's hope for the client it's not at fault!

Take note this is not a how to guide, merely myself talking about the work I do and my thoughts around certain things.

To everyone who made it this far into my post Thank you for the read and the support.

When we get automatic cars in for service we always check the transmissions for two things. oil color and level. When the color is extremely dark we give the client a quote on the oil, gasket and filter. yes it is expensive but still cheaper than a rebuilt or new gearbox most of the time they accept and we replace everything and they comment afterwards that it feels like the vehicle drives better. We also only buy the recommended oils for the appropriate manufacturer and parts directly from the dealership. Only original parts. We don't believe in using aftermarket parts or oil when it comes to automatic gearboxes. They scare us🤣. Also had a couple of ramblings at work about toyota and ford saying it is filled for life. what's the lifetime suppose to be then. 5 years tops? it's ridiculous. sorry started randomly rambling. Singing off now before i continue.
