Hewlett Packard Laying Off Thousands
Working in this industry for over 20 years, I am very familiar with what is taking place. This comes as no surprise to me as the entire sector is under attack.
HP is one of the leading printing and copying companies in the world. They still sell more printers than any other company and, with their acquisition of Samsung 3 years ago, are now a full line manufacturer of copiers.
There is only one problem: it is a dying industry.
The company announced a restructuring. This includes laying off 7,000-9,000 employees, a number that could balloon to 16,000. This is going to happen over the next 3 years.
Of the articles I could find, few mentioned what is really taking place in the industry. This is not uncommon since people involved in an industry are often blind to what is taking place. It is a situation that gets magnified when people operate on a 90 day basis.
Paper is a dying animal. Thus, equipment that is fed this are also on the way out. Over the past decade, the amount of office and writing paper used decreased by over 50%. It is a situation that appears, based upon numbers by the paper manufacturing association, to be accelerating.
HP is involved in many other areas obviously. Their computer division tends to be solid especially since a large portion of servers are HP.
That said, the company is still dependent upon the revenue stream that comes from the copier/printer division. The goal now is to change the pricing model in hopes the bleed of their supply sales will stop. The challenge is the falloff in supply revenue is not due solely to competition.
People are simply printing less than they did a decade ago.
This is something that few around this industry want to talk about.
