My Actifit Report Card: October 2 2021
It was actually dry today, the first time this week, although I was listening to podcasts from other parts of the country talking about being "so warm" and "brilliant sunshine" all week.
Took advantage of the dry to rescue the garden from an invading twining thing from next door, cut down the brambles and cardoons, clear away the tomato bags and dig up the last of the potatoes.
I'll not bother planting potatoes in the ground again, a lot of work for not many potatoes. The ones in pots did well, but next year I'll go for first earlies and/or salad potatoes. I grew Duke of York this year (ironic, although the flowers and foliage looked poisonous, which was fitting). The flesh was lovely - floury and great for mash and toasties, but the skin was thick and not that great. I'll try something different next year.
I had a rogue from last year - white skinned and fleshed - peeled and sliced, turned in oil and layered over a casserole, hot pot style. Delicious and crisp on top, soft and yielding inside, after thirty minutes in the oven.
Early night necessary.

What size pots are you growing potatoes in? I tried that once and got a huge bush but no spuds.
10 inches diameter was recommended, I think I may have used a few nine inch ones, with one seed potato per pot. They worked very well, producing two-three portions per pot, much better than the second year when I used larger containers and got fewer potatoes. They are also easier to move around, so I could plant them early in the season, put them out during the day and bring them under cover at night. I grew Vivaldi last year and they were great.
Good to know, thanks!
