1. Coin Story

The 2013 Intrinsic Tender Buffalo coin was the initiative of a well known and respected Australian Bullion Dealer, Gold Stackers. In the early 2010's Gold Stackers sourced the production of these rounds from one of the largest private mints in the United States.

This round was designed by Elise Martison, who is a very talented illustrator and designer based in Melbourne, Australia. Elise is an acclaimed designer who is responsible for a number of legal tender items issued by the Perth Mint.

The 2013 Intrinsic Tender Buffalo was not the only round that was produced by Gold Stackers. The below list provides the other designs and the mintage of each of the Intrinsic Tender rounds that were minted:

  • Double Mirror 2013 Buffalo - mintage 16,000 rounds
  • Double Mirror Penny - mintage 500 rounds
  • Mirror/Frosted Penny (XAG frosted) - mintage 500 rounds
  • Double Frosted Ram - mintage 300 rounds
  • Frosted/Mirror Ram (XAG mirror) - mintage 25 rounds
  • Mirror/Frosted Ram (XAG frosted) - mintage 25 rounds
  • Double Mirror Ram - mintage 12

As you can see from this list, the Double Mirror finish 2013 Buffalo round has the highest mintage of the Intrinsic Tender rounds that were produced. Although the mintage number of 16,000 rounds is still relatively low, in comparison to the Double Mirror finish Ram's Head round with only 12 rounds minted, it is considerably higher.

Out of all the Intrinsic Tender rounds that were minted, the 2013 Buffalo is also the most affordable. It does attract a nice premium, but in comparison to some of the other rounds with lower mintage, it does not compare. I will do a future post about the other Intrinsic Tender rounds and the premiums they attract on the secondary market... some of these rounds are extremely sort after and very tighly held by avid collectors.

2. Coin Packaging

These coins were originally packaged in sealed plastic tubes, housing 20 rounds without protective plastic capsules. Many collectors have placed their 2013 Buffalo coins into protective plastic capsule to ensure the remain in mint condition. When I purchased my 2013 Buffalo rounds, they came in protective capsules.

3. Coin Details

a. Mintage

The mintage of this coin was 16,000 rounds. Each of the rounds are not issued as legal tender under any state authority, although they do have a denomination of 1 XAG which is the worldwide currency code for silver. So the intrinsic value of this round is 1 Troy Ounce of pure .999 silver, referred to in currency terms as 1 XAG.

b. Purity

The purity of the coin is .999 fine silver.

1 XAG Intrinsic Tender as opposed to Legal Tender of a given country's denomination, I get it. First time seeing this version of the American Buffalo silver round.
