COIN REVEAL: 1/10oz .999 Gold 2012 Wheat Sheaf Dollar Coin

Today's coin reveal post features the 1/10oz .9999 Gold 2012 Wheat Sheaf Dollar coin struck by the Royal Australian Mint.

1. Coin Story

The design of this coin features the 'three wheat stalk' which was designed by George Kruger Gray to be used on the 1938 threepence coin. I actually plan to write a post about Australian pre-decimal coins, pre-war and post-war in the near future, in that post I will include a side by side photo with this 1/10oz gold coin and the 1938 threepence coin so that you will be able to see the 'three wheat stalk' designs on these coins side by side.

This coins was issued with the 'three wheat stalk' design to commemorate the important role a booming agriculture and primary production economy played in Australia's early history. Wheat and wool were the most notable examples of successful primary production in Australia. Still to this day Australian wheat has a superior reputation for resilience and quality.

2. Coin Packaging

a. Outer Shipper Box

This coin is housed in a stylistically designed outer carboard shipper box with the image of a tractor planting wheat and a harvester collecting wheat. The words '2012' and 'WHEAT SHEAF DOLLAR' are prominent in the centre of the box.

b. Wooden Box

The coin is presented in a beautifully finished wooden box made from Jarrah wood. The lid of the box is held closed by two magnets that have been inset into the wood on opposite corners. The coin sits nice and firmly in a maroon felt mould.

c. Certificate of Authenticity

The coin is accompanied with a uniquely numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This coin is numbered '01257'. The certificate of authenticity provides a description of the coin design and gives key details about the coin.

3. Coin Details

a. Mintage

The mintage of this coin was 2,500 coins. Each of the coins were issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Government. The denomination of the coin is $10 (Australian).

b. Purity

The purity of the coin is .9999 fine gold. The mass of the coin 0.1 of a troy ounce.

a. Reverse Design

The reverse of the coin features the 'three wheat stalk' design that was used on the 1938 threepence coin.

a. Obverse Design

The obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design also includes the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II', country of origin 'AUSTRALIA' and the year of issue '2012'.
