SARDINES WITH MISUA

Okay, so nth day of finding whatever ingredients is available in the house! The roads going to the grocery are still flooded, sadly. Flood subsides a bit in the early morning and gets high again by lunch time due to flood coming from other areas combined with high tide. The city mayor said flood might stay until Saturday, so maybe I'll do grocery tomorrow or Monday. This inconvenience is really challenging me to be creative with foods and how to make more servings out of it.

The last canned food in my cupboard is a can of spicy sardines in tomato sauce. My original plan is to divide its contents in half, one serving for breakfast and the other for dinner. (I made this soup four days ago. I just ate the last serving last night.) Going back four days ago, I called my sister to show her the sudden rise of flood in our area. I went back to my room and the subject of our conversation changed from flood to foods. I told her I've been cooking the meatballs in different dishes until she mentioned meatball soup. This gave me an idea to make sardines misua. I remember there was still a small pack of misua noodles on top of the cabinet in our dining area. It's been there for more than a year already. My mama was even the one who bought it.

I know you know who's that man printed on the sardines can. Lol!

That sardines was supposedly for my aunt's cats but I never had the chance to have it fed to them because my aunt already feeds them. I bought this back when they were still kittens and when they love to play around the plants. Little did I know it's me who's going to consume it. Well, I'm also a kat. Haha!

The Sardines Misua is a typical Filipino noodle soup usually with patola (silk squash/sponge gourd) and onion leaves. I don't have those but that won't stop me from making this soup. The misua noodles (wheat vermicelli) are thin and soft noodles. I think this type of noodle is commonly used on Chinese soups/dishes.

My mama ocassionally makes this soup and I love putting some rice in it. For those eating this soup. Do you add rice in it, too?

So, let's proceed!

— INGREDIENTS —

1 Can or 5.5 oz. Sardines in Tomato Sauce
1.59 oz. Misua Noodles
2 Cloves Garlic (minced)
1 Tbsp. Butter
Pinch of Thyme
Oregano Powder
1 Shrimp Broth Cube
3 Cups Water
Salt
Pepper
1 to 2 Tbsp. Fish Sauce

— PROCEDURE —

1.Soak the misua noodles in water for 30 minutes. Set aside. (You can actually start cooking while waiting for the misua noodles to soften. I saw my mama doing this before so I'm doing too.)

2.Put butter on pan and saute garlic and thyme.

5.Pour water and bring to a boil.

6.Add shrimp broth cube. Mix and wait until the broth cube gets dissolved.

7.Pour some fish sauce and check its taste. If you're sensitive to sour taste maybe you can just add 1 tbsp. The key is to add little by little and check its taste every time you add more fish sauce. Now add the misua noodles. (Do not include the water where you soaked the noodles.)

8.Serve and enjoy!

♡ This serving is good for 3 to 4 servings. ♡

From 2 servings to 3 or 4 servings! Honestly, the taste of the sardines misua is still quite the same without the silk squash. It just looks less appealing without those greens though. But I would go for a complete recipe if given the chance. I'm just thankful that my mama bought a pack of this noodles before. She's surely laughing at me from up there. Lol. Thanks, mama! ♡

P.S. Our barangay handed some relief goods yesterday. And guess what it is? Two cans of sardines in tomato sauce and four tiny packs of misua noodles.🤣🤣🤣 Oh, there's also one twin pack of coffee. Guess it will be another week of sardines and misua!🤷‍♀️
