Umbrella Academy, volume 2
Last month I wrote about the first volume of this comic that I read after having watched the first two seasons of the Netflix show. I mentioned that the comic story was quite different, but there were some things in common. Now I have volume two that I just finished reading.
Volume two starts with a flashback years before to give some context before continuing some time after the events of volume one. I think Number Five had the least changes in the transition to the screen and he plays a major role in this story. Season two of the TV show was mostly set in the 1960s, but that plays less of a part in the comic, but both climax around the JFK assassination.
Again it is very violent and lots of blood is spilled.
We do finally get to meet time agents Hazel and Cha-Cha who are totally ruthless as well as their goldfish boss (do not even ask). Eventually we get to Dallas in 1963, via Vietnam, where things get wrapped up.
We get to see more of what the characters can do this time as they are tested in various ways. Their world is a little unlike our own. As well as their superpowers there are chimpanzees performing various roles in society as well as their butler Pogo, but this is not remarked upon.
The artwork is great again with the same artist. In both books there are sketches of character development and an extra short story at the end. They are fairly slim books at around 200 pages.
There is a third volume that I will seek out. It is a while since I was in a bookshop and I do like a browse.

Awesome and quite interesting
Hi. I appreciate the comments, but they need to be more engaging to earn votes.
Looks interesting, think it's more of your generations sort of thing as I didn't grow up with comics, I just played football all day every day during my school years, until about 14 when I got into games workshop, then into music, then I was 33 years old..
Well I read comics like the Dandy and Beano. Later there was Action (pretty violent) and 2000AD, but I didn't read any for a long time. Got into the graphic novels via various films like Watchmen and V For Vendetta. Got more Sandman next.

Brilliant films, v for vendetta (I watched this again a few weeks ago) was written by the, now woman, who wrote the matrix, brilliant film. Watchmen was brilliant too. Have you ever seen cloud atlas?
Alan Moore wrote these comics, but he doesn't tend to like the films. I've not seen Cloud Atlas, but I'll try to catch it some time. I like it when people explore different ideas as long as they don't try to be too clever :)
Ah, sometimes the best is achieved outside the comfort zone!

.I've never seen the series but it does look interesting. I've never been drawn to the violent storylines, not sure why. I remember when the 'zombie' trope really took hold of shows etc about a decade back and never could get into it, in so many ways I thought, "zombies? Go down to the local walmart, there's plenty there" haha.
I love the drawing style of this series tho and the dark colour is really enticing. Maybe it's good I'd not got into it, I'd just have to make more time to read more things haha, life's busy enough, eh?
Thanks for sharing, maybe I'll check out the series one afternoon during tea. Thanks @steevc
The TV series has a nice style to it. Some might call it quirky and there are some great characters. It is pretty violent though.
I don't really get the whole zombie thing. The animated Marvel What If series had an episode where most of them got converted and zombies seem to be everywhere in culture. Fantasy should be about coming up with new things.
I am reading Sandman now and that is a very different style. The comics used lots of different artists. Netflix are filming that, so I will be interested to see how it turns out.

I have never really gotten into graphic novels. There is just so much going on with every page. I am not sure I would be able to keep track of it all. I think it would be overload for me. Who knows.
I think you can enjoy them a bit like a movie, but you can take the time to see what is going on in each scene and unlike a book they don't have to describe everything as you can just see it. The artists make use of different angles and other tricks to keep it interesting. I have only really got into graphic novels in the last few years and now have quite a few, including some by artists on Hive. You have to admire the work that goes into them.
While I’ve never read it myself, it’s super popular at the shop. Glad you are reading sone comics these days my friend!
Cheers. I'm doing some catching up lately. I'll have more to report on soon.
