Hive, big in El Salvador

avatar

It has been a while since I look a look at how Hive is doing across the various dapps. I do monitor some stats for my own amusement, but I will do a deeper dive today to share.

Firstly, I noticed on Hypestat that peakd is a pretty highly ranked site in El Salvador. I know they are into Bitcoin, but it looks like interest in cryptocurrencies has embraced more useful coins. El Salvador is a fairly small country, but if even 1% of the population actually joined Hive it would have an impact. peakd is doing fairly well in Venezuela too.

Peakd stats

These are web stats rather than just logged in users. Looking across the other top web dapps we can see how many people Hive may be reaching globally.

Hive.blog16546232k834k
Ecency21558153k1M
Hive-Engine32727178k178k

Web stats may not always be useful, but they can give some idea of how used a site is. It is possible that more people use the Ecency mobile apps than the site.

I have checked 'the S site' for 'the other blockchain' and it is ranking much higher. I am not sure they have significantly more active users, but the site may have better SEO for whatever reasons. I am sure many of us left links to it all over the place in the past and that may give it more 'Google juice'. I think we need much better SEO for Hive sites. I have seen some say that having the same content on multiple sites may hamper things, but I am no expert on this.

By the way, 'the B site' ranks way lower.

Over on DappRadar we can get some idea of blockchain activity. I am sure they are missing a lot as some dapps should show a lot more users. Rising Star has over 4000 active users, but only shows 66 there. Obviously Splinterlands is well ahead and the user number is close to the web stats. These numbers are for the last seven days. Not everyone visits every day, so daily numbers will be lower.

DappRadar

It used to be possible to check the numbers on StateOfTheDapps, but they do not seem to be collecting any data recently.

I think Hive still has major issues with brand awareness. It does not help that the name clashes with many other things, including other blockchains. We need to improve on this. We do have lots of people tweeting about it and possibly mentioning on other platforms, but is this reaching far beyond the existing community?

Hive will be two years old in a month or so. It has gained a lot of users, but is way off going viral. I know some will say people are being driven away by what they may perceive as excessive 'policing', but I think they are more of a vocal minority. Still, we cannot afford to drive away people who may be good for Hive for not conforming totally to how others imagine it should be. We should deal with real abuse, but if people are willing to change then they should be given a chance.

I check on some other stats that people like @penguinpablo and @arcange produce. Those indicate that we have seen a fall in the numbers of larger accounts and that is worrying. I have been running the @tenkminnows project for ages and we are showing little sign of reaching that target, which seems a fairly modest one to me.

I am still bullish about Hive with all the active projects, but that is tempered by realism about how many people are actually using it. For a start we could do with converting some of those Splinterlands players into being more social using other dapps. Many may not even be aware that is an option as there is little mention of it on the site.

We have come a long way, but there is still much to do.

Hive five.

I know they have embraced BTC, but I wonder how much difference it will really make. What would a bitcoin city be?

From what I heard, its a city where everything is pay for by Crypto, they will also do some mining and everything is powered by the near-by vulcano xD

It will also feature a big bitcoin square in form of a coin in the middle ^^

I am with you on converting Splinterland players to possibly exploring more and there is no mention of this anywhere. I was a little stunned a while ago watching a few interviews with Splinterlands with large audiences. The Hive blockchain was never ever mentioned and wondered if that was even a thought as this is important.

I reached out to a guy recently and he was keen on the game, right up until I mentioned crypto; then he completely lost interest.
If Splinterlands gets a few million players hooked and only 5% discover blogging, that's still an explosion in our numbers. (also adds a lot of scarcity to RCs)

A lot of people seem to have a negative impression of crypto in general. We need awareness that Hive is better than many of the alternatives. We need more people getting involved.

I'm sure most of their players are looking to earn from it and they are missing out on more income. Just seems crazy to not push that aspect.

That's pretty cool that we're growing in a bitcoin friendly market like El Salvador. It's going to be interesting to see if El Salvador becomes a "crypto" friendly region and not just BTC only. I think there are better alternatives out there and it will be cool to see what people start using.

Branding and onboarding should be top priority for HIVE and all our platforms. We need more users and to continue to grow our ecosystem. I'm actually surprised at how the low the numbers are.

It never ceases to amaze me that the crypto community hasn't embraced Hive more. As a "crypto community" we need to support crypto friendly projects. Hive rewards users and adds to the crypto ecosystem. I don't get it. You'd think everyone would hop on the HIVE bandwagon.

I also think we need to be more inclusive. I think the fight over long form and short form content hinders us. Different folks like different formats and everyone should be welcome. I get downvoting low effort content, but I also think short form content has value and there's a difference between short form & low effort posts.

We could be onboarding new users with short form dApps like Instagram, Twitter, and even Facebook style posts. Many devs and users are afraid of that style content though on Hive which lowers user rates and interaction.

IDK, just putting it out there. I love this platform and only want to see us grow. It's great seeing the people of El Salvador using this platform.

I'd love to see a Hive proposal for traditional advertising campaigns in crypto friendly regions of the world. Billboards, radio and tv ads etc.

Great stats, thanks for posting.

You would think more crypto people would embrace Hive as an alternative to things like Twitter and reddit. Don't they want to earn more? I think all forms of content can be valid here. The community can decide what it's worth, but I think if people are going to auto-vote then maybe they need smarter tools for it.

There are some efforts at Hive marketing. See what @lordbutterfly is up to.

My thoughts exactly. I don't get it. Plus it's community support. I get why maxis might not like it, but you would think the altcoin community would fully embrace us and show some support!

but I think if people are going to auto-vote then maybe they need smarter tools for it.

Agreed. I always forget about the auto-votes and that's a great point.

That is great that it is so popular in El Salvador. It makes sense given they are relatively crypto friendly. Might also be a matter of people looking for an alternative wallet given the native BTC on there was having issues.

If they were given some BTC, then maybe they invested it in $HIVE :)
