Unconquered Terrain of Afghanistan – Part 2
Afghanistan was burning. Any news about Afghanistan were listened very carefully. As it is hotbed with many activities. Anything could happen anytime. The history of Afghanistan is always written with red letter with so many conspiracies and bloodshed involved over the ages. In Part 1 of my self-investigation. I covered how the political condition took a turnaround over many years, and how modernization was introduced in the country. But changes were not acceptable, and the country was getting ready to face another chapter with the growth of Mujahideen. Let see how things unfolded after the country men started rebelling again the government modernization policy.
Assassination of Nur Mohammad.
In the PDPA government, Nur Mohammad was the Prime minister, and Hafizullah amin was the foreign minister as well the deputy Prime minister. The USSR never trusted upon Hafizullah Amin as much as they on Nur Mohammad. In fact, there were some rumours to that Amin was an US CIA agent. In 1978 Nu Mohammad, went to Moscow to further strengthening their tie ups with USSR. In that visit, the USSR government made him understand that amin was a US allies and working for CIA. They insisted Nur Mohammad to remove Amin from the ministry. They also highlighted the critical condition in the country and reduce the social reforms.
Nur Mohammad assures of the positive result and also removing Amin from the posts. The CIA comes to know of this planning and informed Amin about the development occurs in Moscow. When Nur Mohammad landed came back from the USSR tour, he and his family killed by Amin in the airport. Amin took over the control and becomes the new Prime Minister of Afghanistan.
USSR invasion on Afghanistan
As soon as USSR comes to know of the assassination, they realize that Afghanistan will be out of their hands. On the one hand, In Afghanistan Mujahideen were up against the communist government and on the other hand the Prime Minister who works according to them is no more. It was not just a murder but a direct challenge thrown to USSR. And over and above the Afghanistan have a USA supported Prime Minister in the form of Hafuzullah Amin. Looking after all the development, the USSR were pretty sure that the Afghanistan government will run as per the USA instruction.
Because of all these economic development in the country, On 24 December 1979, USSR entered Kabul with thousands of Armies and took political and military control over major parts of the country. Hafizullah Amin was killed by the USSR and they again appointed a self driven leader whose name was Barack Kamal. When the world was criticising USSR, then USSR said that they did not attack Afghanistan, rather they helped the government to deal with the extremists.
US Entry & Proxy War
Seeing the foreign involvement in their country, the people of Afghanistan were also enraged and more and more people becoming Mujahideen to take revenge from USSR. Along with this, all the hard work of US had gone to waste so #USA was not happy either. Then US president Jimmy Carter, announced that whatever Afghanistan has done in US Persian gulf region, is a direct threat to US and to safeguard the US interest, they will go to any extent, even if the military has to be fired. This makes US entry into Afghanistan.
US had two allies inside Asia, one was #Pakistan and the other was Saudi Arabia. And if #USSR, would have made its influence on Afghanistan, then it would never have been able to make its influence in the whole of Asia. This makes it necessary for the USA to stop the influence of USSR inside Afghanistan. The condition was such that if US had entered directly into Afghanistan, then US and USSR would have ushered a direct war. US did not want that, that is why they chose the other path. US turned towards many Islamic country against the USSR by saying that it is an attack on the religion. Also, US started supporting the Mujahideen who were fighting inside Afghanistan in all possible means. Even with the help of Pakistan, US started training all the Mujahideen in Pakistan, for which Pakistan got a lot of money.
#US has also sought help from the Saudi Arabia. US #CIA along with Pakistan ISI made Maktab al Khidmat Organisation and told the people in the whole region that this is an open attack on religion and everyone should come in it. Many people come forward to fight this battle which included 3 very important men. One was a young millionaire, Osama Bin Laden, Second, was Abdullah Azzam and third was Omar Khadr. These three reached Pakistan Peshawar. They were not directly involved in the fight but helped the battle financially and in making different strategies for the battle.
They use to watch all the recruitments of the mujahideen. These three had all the data of the area. This is how Al-Qaeda comes into picture. Al-Qaeda in Arabic means the “base”. They had all the database of all the mujahedeen who were recruited at that time and Al Qaeda was formed with that name. Western country also supported US in this.
The other propaganda that was very famous was the movies. All the movies that used to come at that time, Mujahideen were shown as a hero so that the young generation get influenced and take part in the holy battle. Like 1986 James bond film “The Living Daylight” Mujahideen was shown as courageous fighter, similarly, 1988, in the movie the “Rambo”, the movie hero fights along with mujahideen against the soviet. All these were the propaganda strategy to make Mujahideen popular among the countrymen.
But how the friends in Osama Bin Laden, turns into US enemy? Will USA able to over throw USSR from Afghanistan? Do the Afghanistan people yet to see the worst?
The history of Afghanistan is getting murkier. There are more question and doubts than answer. Let see if I manage to answer them in my next part. Hope you enjoyed reading.
