Pigeon Pea - Arhar Dal ( The Pulse of India)
Winter season brings along a lot of gardening opportunities. From potatoes to tomato to many other things. One particular things which is really excites me is the pigeon pea. Infact I have loads of childhood memories attached to this plants.
I remember walking down the fields and eating these pea from the garden. The fresh green buds direct from the garden simply tastes sweet and quite juicy. These pigeon pea also known as Arhar in India. And forms an I Tegra part of Indian kitchen. Infact beside Gram this is the main pulse crops in our country.
The seeds inside the buds looks very similar to what we see in normal pea. Only difference is that it has slightly thinner buds as compaired to peas. As I mentioned it early, it is consumed in larger quantity and is considered as rich source of protein. Apart from the raw fruits that is shown above, it get dried to make an integral pulse food item in India.
Ever ypu visited any Indian restaurant or hotel, you may find arhar Dallas or tour Dallas in their menu. These requires easy cooking, as it just needed to be boiled and add salt, with little bot more of garnishing.
As far as plant is concerned, it has a normal size of 5 to 10 feet and has long leaves. It grows in bushes and require little caring. I know munching most of the raw fruits from plants. Though too much might affect your digestion as it contains high protein and iron.
These plans bears a Yellow flower before the yeild could be estimated. The blooming yellow flowers looks very nice on the plant. However it has closed petals that looks like soft box on the plant.
These flower transform into little fruits with closed buds like shape. Each one of them have a box inside which you will find the little arhar production.
These are more than one such buds on each flower. And gives a decent yeild.
This is little bit of the garden update for this month. I have tried to produce this in my small courtyard and looking at the produce, I hope I could give it a full fledged try next year.
