The Real Definition of Failure (And Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid of It)
Failing can be difficult, in fact devastating which is synonymous to also losing but truth be told, failing doesn't make you a loser or a failure. Then the question is, what exactly does?
Are you done thinking?
I have repeatedly defined failure in my previous blog posts and it is neither the act of failing but the act of not wanting to fail or even the fear of failure itself. To make it clearer, if you fail to make an attempt towards something, then you have failed before you try.
What does being a loser really mean? this is a person who is scared of losing and does not make an attempt to play the game. Losing itself doesn't make you a loser, because the more you lose, the more you recognize the patterns of the game and become wiser.
Every winner or successful person has failed more times than they have won and because they have learned from every turn, every mistake and failure they have encountered and have become wise to know which way causes them to fail. They learned on each turn.
Life is like that, building a skill is like that. Take everything as an experience and a lesson to be learned. If it doesn't turn out the way you seem to be, don't take it as it is but as it seems to be. You decide the way you see your bottle, as either half full or half empty.
Something similar happened that baffled me a few days ago. You know the pull of a generator, mine got bad, and I know how bad I am at putting my generator on with just a rope. I would have called a generator mechanic to help me service it, but I am at the richest point of my life.
So I decided to try using the rope to start my generator. At first, it was difficult, I spent one hour outside with my generator all trying to put it on and after so many trials and errors, I was able to do it.
I felt like calling someone to service it already but I had to resist the urge and see how I would do the next time.
The second time I tried it, I was able to do it but this time I had spent about 20-30mins with the generator because I had not totally figured out how to set the rope to the generator wheel and pull it.
The next day I went back to it, and I noticed that the more I spent time on it, the less time I spent to start it. After about two days, I noticed I ended up using 2-3mins to start the generator as opposed to the initial one hour I spent.
Someone who is new and does not know how to do this would be surprised how I was able to put on my generator without the pull, but they would not see the effort I had placed in and also not see that I had failed so many times to become good at it.
This is more the reason why I shape my definition of failure as not being successful but as the pathway to attaining success itself. Failing is a requirement and one should not feel bad about it if it happens. It only just means we are one step closer to the real deal.

To be honest, the concept of the bottle of water being half full or half empty still leaves me somewhat confused.
Also, I had the same experience when learning to turn on the generator for the first time in my life. I wanted to give up several times because it strained my muscles and the only reason I didn't give up was because I was the only one who could do it.
I was so proud of myself when I finally succeeded.
I think the most important part is to take your time to learn from every failure.
I do believe that if one keeps try, one would get it right with time. Failure is not to quit but a reason to learn.
