Everyone Has the Power to Control Their Emotions

Everything was going right for my mom lately. She found a new job doing what she loves, she sets her own hours, and best of all no stress. She was hired to play games & activities at a senior living home, but life had different plans. She went to pick me up so we could run some errands, on our way back to the car she stepped in a pothole and sprained her ankle, as well as fractured her foot and a few toes.

I've been having a pretty good day overall, but seeing my mom in this situation upset me quite a bit. She is the most loving, caring person I have ever met. She has worked in Hospice care for over 10 years. Hospice is a job where you take care of dying people, making sure they feel comfortable, clean, and happy at their end of life. She has had tons of random bad luck in her life(she's 61), just like I have, and as she got older she learned to look past unfortunate events, laugh off terrible luck, and make the best out of the bad times. Seeing her laugh at the terrible circumstance made my view that everyone is in control of their emotions in most situations seem more valid than ever.

Why is it when all the stars align, and life seems too good to be true, it usually ends up being too good to be true? Disaster usually follows in huge bursts, right when things start to get good. I realized recently it's better to just let life happen and laugh off the constant mayhem because it is out of our control. If something makes me forced to be extremely late for work, It’s not my fault, so why should I feel bad? If I lose my job as a result, oh well shit happens and I just have to jump back on the saddle and keep trucking.

Life is very strange. I’ve had the best times in the worst situations, and vice versa. I have gone through surreal experiences of feeling happy as hell while being completely sober, In a police van, on my way to court, talking to the other inmates about what kind of disaster happened to land us in this situation. We were laughing harder than we ever have at the stories. When I start taking things for granted, I feel terrible even when everything is right in the world. For example, I could have got a new job, a new phone/pc, etc, and still been completely miserable over extremely minor inconveniences. It's all about perspective. If you have power over perspective then you will rarely get stuck in a random bad mood.

Good happens to bad people, and bad happens to good people. Life seems like a crap chute in that regard. So why stress over the fact you have done so much good, but you still got screwed over. We have no control over what happens most of the time, and it's a waste of time to stress over it.

Sure, this won't work if someone you love is in a state of extreme suffering, or something terrible enough happens to you or a loved one. Focusing on how it's just mind over matter works a majority of the time though. This has helped me a lot in keeping a positive attitude through life's trials and tribulations lately.

Now that's a pretty interesting story...)

I agree, you just have to let life live itself... Then every day becomes the same as it was in my childhood: everything is interesting, bright and often funny).

Emotions is what makes us Human. It makes up about 99% of our being and we express this emotions in different ways.
It's such a broad topic and you did perfect justice to the topic.
Stating strongly that we're in control of these emotions and should master it so it doesn't rule over us.
Brilliant Post Squids, love it👏💡❤️

As someone on the autism spectrum, I really struggle with emotions. Not only do I find it hard to detect the emotional state of others, but I also don't recognise my own emotional state most of the time. In my own blog post series here on HIVE, I am forcing myself to reflect on my own emotions / mood, and I get my wife to help me to recognise my emotions. It is not easy when you are autistic.

Your post here is really interesting, @squids, and it gave me some insight into your personality. You have a very positive attitude, despite all that you have been through, and that is commendable. Keep seeing the glass as being half full!

I always thought I was on the spectrum, but now I don't think so. Either way a diagnosis doesn't define who I am. I have had a lot of issues with making excuses why I cannot do something because I have some handicap preventing me. Now, I know nothing of how autism effects your ability to recognize your emotional state, but try stopping yourself from making excuses, and see how it works out(this is just my own experience, and I'm not trying to come off in any sort of negative way).

I was diagnosed with autism very late in life, when I was already old and grey. I have a lifetime of experience behind me, without ever even knowing about autism or that I might have it. My diagnosis of being on the Spectrum was the most liberating and empowering experience in my whole life, as it finally made sense to me of all the situations and experiences that I have had up to that point, which never before made sense to me, or to those around me. Autism is not an excuse for anything, but it is an explanation.

I totally, agree. Some might argue that that's the real beauty of life.

It does make life interesting, but also made my late teens/early adult years very difficult. I couldn't come to terms with life not being "fair". I followed you back <3 thank you very much for the follow.

Had a pretty horrible day, but nothing a few bags of popcorn, coffee and a ton of cigarettes can't fix. Faced with homelessness and life in shambles, but I can still look at the positives, and realize it will all pass soon enough. Long story short, I still am testing positive for marijuana, and have not used since 2/26/22. They wanted to kick me out because I could not come up with 50$ in 1 day, but I called my folks and it will all be worked out tommorow.

There is always a solution, good or bad , life will move on and you got to face it day by day. Nobody said it would be easy. And like Wes always says tomorrow is the goal

**Why are emoticon images made yellow? **
The truth is to show that all emotional states are natural, it's okay to be angry or sad and others. But we must control all emotions and whatever the circumstances we must remain happy.

The answer to the question above is that when someone sees yellow, the body will release serotonin, a hormone that can evoke feelings of happiness.

Congratulations again on your first month sober. Keep on going you are doing great.
I believe that what will happen will happen, we can only control so much, the rest we get dealt whatever is meant to happen to us!

Thanks! We are in control of our decisions I know that, but the cloud of addiction while actively using takes away most of the power to make the right decision. Besides that, we must take what we get, and not get too bent out of shape from all the BS. Thanks for taking the time to reply, and that goes for everyone else who replied too. :)

Addiction I agree does blur decision making. You are doing so well, which is just awesome.

Yes, you got it right, everyone has the power to control their emotions. Also, that needs high level of maturity, self awareness, self confidence. But, it's not that it's difficult. No, it is not. You can just do it with a little will, determination, and most importantly goodness ahead. very nice post, thanks for sharing! 🙏😊

That's funny but true, I relate to this "good times" and "worst times" have no change over how happy you are.

I liked the inmate story, thanks for including it.~
