Building a cat escape box

avatar

My foreman got a barn cat, right now it mostly lives indoors until it grows bigger. We have owls and other large animals roaming the property at night, so we are waiting for the cat to grow larger and become a full grown adult before we let it spend the night outside. But until then we built a box for it that we will place outdoors. Its purpose is to help protect the cat if a predator goes after it. By having a corridor design the cat can escape and stay safe inside if the need emerges.

There is an outer wall and an inner wall, this way the cat can get deep into the box for safety. We plan on putting a blanket in there as well.

The workshop is a bit of a mess right now.. lol

Using plywood its all measured and cut to size.

Hinges are used to connect the doors and box.

Marking with a sharpie we have a good line to cut using the skill saw.

The first few pieces are cut.

We start assembly by just holding them up, making sure everything will fit.

Using small 2x4 blocks it gives us more meat to screw pieces together.

The inner wall is being attached to the outer wall.

Testing the first door, there are two.. a smaller one for the cat compartment and a bigger one that encloses the rest of the escape box.

We can see the small opening the cat has, and should help protect her from wild animals.

With it almost assembled its now time to find some weights to put in it to keep the box from being flipped over.

And its done, now we wait for the cat to grow. Its a young kitty so it needs to be bigger before it can be outside at night alone. But feels good we have a box built for the cat to use.

Without a doubt it feels very good to do something for someone else, especially if it is part of the family. A cat is another member of the clan and you have to help it grow protected, until it can take care of itself.
I loved this box, they did a great job.

Have a beautiful day dear friend @solominer

So true, we must take care of the cat. It will help keep rodent populations down, so I need to make sure the cat is well cared for.

Thanks, hope you do too.

Hehehehe... What a great idea! While I was following the photos, I was wondering where is the cat?! 😃
I bet it will appreciate it when it grows as cats like to explore boxes... 😃

Once the box is complete it looks like the cat can live comfortably and safely. This is also a great activity.

Yep I think it will help the cat feel safe, and maybe it will protect them from the cold nights. Thanks, glad you liked it.

other large animals

What else would eat a cat?, you must have enormous Owls... 😀

We have many Coyote on the property, that would be my major concern. But we also have bears, though I do not think this plywood box would provide much protection from a black bear.

Wish I could get a pictures of the Owls here.. indeed they are huge :-)

Hope she’s smart enough to use it in time. Smart cats live longer #fact

Eagles 🦅 kill small unleashed dogs sometimes in the German Alps. Too fucking bad for the small dogs. People have setup warning signes for foreigners already.

Let me check if I can find a pic…
