Tales of the Urban Explorer: Linton Camp
It was a nice sunny day when I dropped @bingbabe off for her Ultra, a gruelling 50-mile run that encompassed all of the Yorkshire Three Peaks in a single day.
Not a chance I was doing any of that, it's far too much effort especially when there's an unusual old location quite close by to go visit.
Few have been to Linton Camp only because it is in the back of beyond and rumoured to be quite a wreck.
There have been stories of child abuse, and torture resulting in the camps' closure in 1986. I searched but could not find any evidence of this abuse besides one other article that is exploring related.
...unless you look into all the advertisements from lawyers who want a stake in your cash for filing suits against who, Bradford Council?

The stories I read were about a strict regime, but are mostly fond memories of the past.
Linton Camp dates back to 1940 and being countryside, was an ideal place to send your kids (in the war years) so they didn’t get bombed and killed by the Nazis.
It was closed in 1986. That's a long time for a place to deteriorate, especially one made mostly of wood.
I pulled up outside the gates and figured there was nowhere else to park besides just there. A farmer was doing his stuff with a combine harvester nearby but other than that, silence.

Ignoring the keep-out signs, I vaulted over and spotted a cabin right away. It looked in decent condition and was not locked.
I knew there were things to look at within Linton Camp but did not guess most of it was within this first cabin.
Turning the pages was out of the question. The weather outside was decent but the magazines from 1974 were well and truly sodden.
‘The Onion Room’ looked to have a lot of junk left inside. That was going to be the next port of call. I was hoping to meet ‘The Onion Man’ but he was not home.
It is comforting to know what in years past nothing has changed, and the UK weather was damp then. There were plenty of items worth looking at in the room.
It looked like a fine TV once. Is it one of those fancy old Bang & Olufson sets?
I did have to stand on a lot of junk to get over here. It was moderately stuffed with crap but not over the top.
The kids did play then; it wasn’t all strict hard work.
Young kids, not teenagers. I expect what's left behind is from the 1970s or 1980s.
More motoring magazines, one of the teachers must have lived on-site and subscribed to several. 1973, and the Triumph Stag; I do remember those, and them being a boy racer car.
If only someone has not ripped away the protective plastic, these might have been readable.
I wish I could say the rest of Linton Camp was as enthralling as the first cabin. Many of the old wooden buildings were standing but could be blown over with a high wind.
Obtaining a great cover shot was nigh impossible without a drone (which I don’t have). I climbed to the highest place I could find and had to settle with what’s on show.
Some of the remaining structures were in better condition than others.
While it looks like blood, it’s probably not.
Was it such a bad place for kids? If the rumours about abuse are false it might have been quite fun to stay here if you could get over the homesickness and make friends with juvenile offenders.
There has been talk about re-developments but nothing has happened yet.
No issues gaining access; use the windows or the doors.
‘Warning Fragile Roof’ – I do love flavoursome warnings such as these.
I was alone for this exploration and it was a little creepy, especially when the wind blew and many structures creaked in unison.
Linton Camp is moderately sized and I would think could have handled over 100 kids.
On the way back I noticed a caravan. Having read that the camp was used by travellers aka gypsies after its closure I had to have a look.
It may be a little cold due to the lack of windows but if you could get used to the curtains brushing your face all night and the howling wind, a good night's sleep could be had.
Simply re-arrange the cushions and it’s a perfectly good home.
Gas and running water, maybe…
… and some good old-fashioned stodgy English drama. Grab the TV from the cabin and you are all set.
DVDs did not start appearing until around 1997. It does tell me when the gypsies were living here or trying to.
A little creepy but I am not used to solo exploring. One could easily get jumped here, knifed to death, and remain undiscovered for months. I left to rendezvous with @goblinknackers and more planned explores that day.

Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
All inbreds around Grassington. I used to have a shared caravan very close to there in the 80s with some mates and the locals were absolute tossers, calling us townies and always trying to pick fights in the local pub.
Admittedly, we were always racing our cars around and getting pissed but even so, you'd think the local bumpkins would be glad of the boost to their economy!
There was a similar camp school in Hornsea I went for a couple of weeks in the 70s, same Nissan huts etc, it was just across from the Mere. I wonder if that's still there?
loved the clouds in this pic
In the 80's, so was it open then? Inbreds haha.., are you not putting down your own Yorkshire kin?
I had no idea this existed until another explorer visited in 2020. It's out of the way so needed an excuse to travel so far.
I'm not sure it was open but I knew about it back then, all that part of the Dales is full of weirdos.... it's like on American Werewolf in London
You wouldn't want to be stuck up there at night lol
Haha.. we got some of the 'American Werewolf in London' treatment in East Marton, not so far up but just inside the Yorkshire border I believe. It's up for sale now.., shame.. the food was decent.
Excellent cutation
Do I sense a slight yearning for a drone for these outdoor site shots?
That caravan, bang in some Windows and boom, your laughing!
Only for the shots. They are noisy as fuck and bad for most places which I have to employ ninja mode. Here would have been good. Farmer Giles would not have noticed, he was too far away.
You could lift off from a wee distance away and once it is up in the air no one would hear. But they are noisy as fuck. My name has one and I was astonished at how noisy they were
Man your pictures just keep getting better!
Thanks, I do try.., but still miss a lot of opportunities.
It is surprising that Linton Camp was not bombed by the Nazis. Then, they did have conscience, strange.
Oh it's far too rural for them to have bothered with. Around 25 miles from Bradford.
Shots are really cool, quite an adventure that was.
What an amazing exploration man. I simply loved it.
The house from the outside with green lush grass and blue sky was worth watching.
And from the inside, I loved how you explored the kids books as well lol.
It's those details I like to capture, old writing especially. You never know who reads these, perhaps the one who penned the ink? I'm hoping that would happen one day.
I was keep reading those lines from the kids notebook.
Q.What time of day is it?
A. Morning
Q.What is the weather like?
A. It is very damp.
Q.Where was the boy?
A. In his bedroom.
Q. How do we know he has commited a crime?
A. A boy with some body....and i can't read later those words.
Onion room must be made for french onion soup to be enjoyed in too cold weather.
I am curious whether people still living there or just abandoned .The Green field with blue sky with white clouds are more beautiful . Awesome and entertaining article i read ever in urban explorer community.
It's abandoned now, even that luxurious caravan. The feeling was a little creepy. I generally explore with an other.
Could you fly a drone if you would want to or you need special permission?
The law has changed and now you need a pilots license, unless the drone is a very small one. One can always bend the law though!

Personally, I would not want to meet the onion man. I would want to meet anyone living in the places you visit lol.
The couch, bed and drapes in the caravan are amazing. What a pattern!
You do get some weird people, I have met a few.
I salute every post that you share, word by word you assemble it into a sentence, and the sentence remains at the core of the post.
And the photos you share are also very cool, I might be able to learn from your method, although it will take a long time.
Thank you for your interesting posts, a valuable knowledge for me.
Have a nice day @slobberchops 🥰🥰🤗🤗
Seeing that onion man sign I'd be gone out that door running. Weird aul super villain. Smells and makes you cry.
An ominous place! Apparently due to the contrast between the pastoral landscape and the ruins. Blue sky with white clouds, green plants and destroyed walls and floors ... Horror!
Amazing photos! Very interesting place and such an adventure :)

Nice
I have to agree with you that it might be a little bit creepy to go solo exploring, you just never know what's out there, waiting for you. In case you think I'm joking, I assure you I am not. Inside of that trailer actually looked pretty nice oh, it's kind of surprised me in the quality of furniture that they had unless it just looks better than it is.
I guess I didn't know that thing @bingbabe is a a terrifyingly long-distance Runner. One day and the Yorkie Three Peaks? Not this chick. Are you a long distance Runner too? My hat is off to her. I just have never been able to go the distance. I'm small town.
People don't go to Linton can't because it's rumored to be a wreck? I'm not sure that has ever stopped them. There are some places that you go into that are questionable at best, for safety and for everything else. But I have noted that you are a dog of a different color. If you can get in it it's yours. I read a few things about the child abuse and the closing of the camp and Jordans Solicitors handsome friend up a site that wants to help you pursue these claims. On a different site where they were telling tales of the school, somebody that the size 12 slipper on the back side for running away and many said that it was very strict. Some said if you would not even to stand under the clock is punishment and other children will laugh at you as you in past but that's not very abusive. If you were bad at night he had to stand in the corner and learn a poem by heart. The Headmaster just to grab ears if they were bad or stand under the clock but honestly I think there's more allegations but I haven't been able to substantiate any of the rumors either.
I think my granny could have made the Vault over that fence. It doesn't look like they tried to keep anybody out of any building and the entire . Evens the locals didn't stop you. The first cabin was awesome and like you said it's too bad they didn't leave those things wrapped up in plastic. That would have been awesome. I'm still interested in Who The Onion Man was? You wanted to meet him? I'm kind of glad he wasn't there. I find it interesting reading through the notebooks and even though this was fussed up a little bit, I interesting stuff in it although I guess I didn't realize that they had young kids there.
We have to go higher on these post because you need to get a drone, not because your posts aren't already cool enough oh, but I think that there are days where it would be absolutely amazing. More amazing it's more like it because the posts are already phenomenal. I think that's blood on that wall no matter what you said. LOL I have to save it it looks like a bomb shelter that was bombed and that warning fragile roof sign it's pretty cool. When I lived in Europe I swear to God that everybody was afraid of the gypsies going through town and honestly it sounded like my mother and grandmother. Growing up in New England any time we went to Providence Rhode Island oh, my grandmother would have a heart attack saying don't you leave that out because the gypsies will take it. I came to hear the gypsies and I never did see them but I heard plenty of tales about them. In Europe everybody has seen gypsies. They don't even mind warning you about them. Why thank you for taking us along and this was actually much better than it could have been. Although don't make me give you a speech about going places like this alone. I know I know. I probably got an eye roll. Have an amazing weekend. I am sure that you are being the dutiful husband and giving your lovely bride a foot massage after her long, grueling day.
My wife is running crazy, it's what keeps her going in life. Without it, she would be totally miserable. I can't keep up with her, though I do try occasionally. It keeps the fat reserves from building up too much.
The abuse.., I always think of sexual abuse.. but it could be regular abuse as mentioned in those memoirs from previous occupants of the camp. This was all quite normal when I was a kid. Things are not like that now.
Onion Man is simply scrawls from some other idiot who went there earlier I presume. Its makes for some flavour in the story.. hopefully not Onion flavour :)
Looks like a prison camp with resident 'onion man'. Would kids put up with it now, especially if they couldn't take their phones? Life was simpler back then.
Is it possible to get a caravan with tasteful furnishings? Those I've seen seem pretty retro, but maybe things have changed. Other half went to a camping exhibition and some caravan makers catered for the 'travellers' with nice display cases for their nicknacks. I can't see me getting a caravan anyway.
You ought to get a drone for some aerial shots.
LOL, I'm sure 'The Onion Man' was invented long after everyone left! I stayed in a caravan only a couple of weeks ago for a weekend. It was damn cold I tell you!
The drone, no thanks. I tried and didn't like them.
For the little time you say it has, it looks somewhat run down, there is also a bit of disorder inside the facilities, in general it looks like a summer camp place

Some nice treasure there matey. But i am still in a state of nervous shock a 50 mile rung Fuck me, is @bingbabe home yet?
I would have loved to look through some car mags from 1974. It doesn't half take you back, but as usual they were as soggy as a heavily used vagina. (Should I try that comment on 28dayslater?)
The running.. yes, it seems impossible. I have climbed all those peaks individually and they are somewhat taxing. To run up them all and 50 miles in 13 hours (that's how long it took)... seems nuts to me. That's what she likes, so I taxi for her.
nah, you are too kind
It's like really fantastic writing. Reminded the lifestyle and also the nature around us, what we left and what we taking these days. We all are running along with our busy schedules. Everything changes day by day.
wowow - this light or the re-work on the pics make them looking soo colorful and cool

Wow! Amazing reportage, quality content, yes sir!
That keyboard!!! i bet you can still make it work, i find all kind of stuff abandoned, i once found a Casio CT prototype from 1968 and it it was still working after a little bit of repairs.

That place looks like it was probably fun for kids! I'd not be surprised if it saw some awesome staff, as well as some abusers, and a good mix of indifferent people who just saw a job. A place that big and that old went through tons of employees and kids in its history. The land itself looks really inviting.
