Tales of the Urban Explorer: Froghall Farm

avatar
(Edited)

It looked like a complete wreck, and worse.., there was a big bloody fence between us and ‘it’.

Was it even worth it trying to get over one of the handful of 'standard keep out' fences? I recognized the green spiky type. I know all of them now, one becomes an expert in fencing.., quite sad really.

10_IMG_6126_10.jpg

This type is not to be toyed with and can remove your man parts if not careful. It's better to look for breaks along the edges that can exist but be quite invisible.

We had driven off-course to visit ‘Froghall Farm’, it was hosted within a small village in the middle of nowhere that once boasted a huge industrial site, most of it flattened and on the edge was this..., what you see.

‘Let’s walk around and see if we can approach it from a different angle?’, I suggested to @anidiotexplores who was dying to lose his balls to the spiky deterrent facing us.

'The other side' proved remarkably easier, with some derpy-looking building thrown in for free.

...'there was something down there, and we.. were going to have a look no matter how shit it looked'...

I checked some old Google maps of this area and noted it's been like this for at least a decade. Fuck knows what it used to be.

1_IMG_6114_1.jpg

Years before, the land surrounding this burnt-out ex-toilet shed used to be full of parked cars. I am guessing this was the workers from the old, 'Thomas Bolton Copper Factory', an old factory demolished in 2011.

2_IMG_6116_2.jpg

Making a note to make our way to the original target, we walked into a fire-bombed mess, typical of something that's been neglected for so long.

3_IMG_6117_3.jpg

As this was almost next to the aforementioned flattened site, I can only assume it was related, long ago.

4_IMG_6118_4.jpg

Sinks as well as a solitary pisser tell me it could have been a bathroom of sorts for blokes. As for the rest, it was a blackened mess, strewn with miscellaneous graffiti of varying quality.

5_IMG_6119_5.jpg

6_IMG_6121_6.jpg

8_IMG_6123_8.jpg

For something so remote, I was surprised to discover a little decent art work, but the style was not one I recognised.

9_IMG_6125_9.jpg

7_IMG_6122_7.jpg

After finding not a shred of humanity left, we waded through some long grass up to the 'house' and found it decidedly easier than fighting with that massive fence.

11_IMG_6127_11.jpg

We came across it quickly but were most disappointed to find it completely sealed.

Something this isolated surely had been compromised? It wasn’t going to be so, and noting the nearby scaffolding, someone had at least been attempting a restoration and likely had run out of cash.

12_IMG_6128_12.jpg

Was this the old mansion of Mr. Bolton before his business went to shit? There could well be jewels in there, priceless ones.

The surrounding outhouses were numerous but as this was mid-summer and nobody had been here for literally years, most were overgrown with prickly brambles and off-limits.

13_IMG_6129_13.jpg

The chair had seen better days and stood patiently waiting for someone's arse to sit in it. As tired as I was, it was a tad dusty and grimy for me so passed.

14_IMG_6130_14.jpg

The buildings we did manage to infiltrate looked similar to the toilet house, empty and without anything to see. They were even void of graffiti; very disappointing.

A fireplace indicates humans did live here, and this wasn’t some old cow shed and what we were walking on was not vintage cow shit, but I could be wrong.

15_IMG_6131_15.jpg

With some effort, we made our way over the scaffolding, which was incredibly awkward.

Thick patches of nettles and those wayward tall brambles were in our faces all the way. Managing to reach the other side of the house, we spotted a gap on the second floor.

This would have meant climbing the scaffolding which in regular circumstances could have been achievable.

By this time, we were pissed off and the thought of reaching the base level of the climb was too much. Too many cuts, skin rashes, and the thought of a possibly renovated interior were in our heads.

16_IMG_6132_16.jpg

On crawling through that upper window, what if there was no floor and a sheer drop into yet more derpy bliss?

‘Fuck this man, let’s bail and get into Stoke proper’.., were my thoughts likely said out loud.

So far, Stoke-on-Trent had been the king or derps, possibly eclipsing Bradford for the trophy. Grumbling we backtracked thinking if there was a hole in that green fence we could be out in a jiffy.

This is what you get sometimes when looking for those gems. A big pile of shit!

Imagine the treasure behind that locked up part. I had half been hoping this was to be the gay man's house 😀

You might find @grindle posts 'The Gay Man's' house before me as I shared it with him yesterday. I think the purple dildo was turning him on. Expect to see it from me in around a year 😀

Sinks and the solitery pisser seems so close to each other, thus not a hygienic environment :)

It was likely constructed sometime in the 19th century. People died of all kinds of horrible diseases then, and hygienic conditions was far from the minds of the toilet designers :)

Apart from the fact that the mansion is an old building, it is vety obvious that it is big and is owned by someone who was rich in the ancient days...

I would say that's a fair statement. Being so close to the old factory would substantiate that point.

I would have guessed it was some kind of garage or something like that. Just based on the shape. We have similar buildings kicking around here and there. They are usually all derelict like this, but not always burned out.

it was some kind of garage or something like that.

It could have been, the inside was too trashed and burnt out to figure out what was originally there. Google maps doesn't go back so far.., over 10 years previous.., it was the same.

One day it will be cool to have some historic data from sites like Google Maps. I don't think we have really been using it long enough to appreciate how much of an impact that info will have. Then again, no one may even care!

As beautiful as it looks from outside, it is equally scary from inside. 😅😅🤭

Wow, this property is in a really bad shape :) Still bizar that no-one seems to care about the property or it's options to build something new on the grounds....

It is in a small rural village. It's not exactly on prime land, and is far from the closest town.

Backyard art on the wall about the only treasure to find, should have grabbed a photo of that without all the crap in front of it. Mouse or Man under flag 🙃

Have an awesome day !BEER

Yes, that was one of the better art pieces, if you can call it that. If it was closer to Sheffield, things would have been better.

The beginning of this reminded me of a little poem I once wrote:

“I broke my pelvic girdle,
When the fence I tried to hurdle,
But worse was total failure,
To protect my genitalia.”

Be careful.
