Tales of the Urban Explorer: Abandoned Scan
‘Abandoned Scan’ had me very nervy. I was having one of those déjà-vu moments of a year before.. similar to my encounter at Tetrosyl.
Ironically @anidiotexplores (who I then knew but did not explore with) had told me about that old chemical plant, arrived with some others, and left as he had a ‘bad feeling’ about it.
“This one will be gone in a few weeks”, @anidiotexplores explained to me. “The whole site is getting demolished”.
Hopefully digger machines with huge claws won’t arrive, penetrate the roof and crush us while we are inside..., I thought pensively.
With lots of threats of security, things were not looking optimistic from the front. The fence while climbable had a lot of that green spiky shit farside.
My colleague had been assured this was abandoned and someone had been inside recently. Still, I wasn't quite sure but seeing that this was the only building left on the other side of those gates semi-convinced me it was worth a crack.
Once again we had to find the way in and hope the local nosey bastards would not call the cops. The grounds were relatively easy to access after some scouting and my mind was put at slight ease when I spotted the obvious signs of neglect.
“That’s it..”, my colleague chirped up.
“What.. that ever so small gap?”
"Yeah, let's go"
I can never fault @anidiotexplores for arsing about. He was climbing up in seconds and through the gap leaving me thinking..
How the fuck can I get through a hole that small?
Not wanting to be thwarted I hauled myself up, used the rail for leverage, and swung my feet through bending my back the wrong way.
This is never a good idea and if it wasn’t for the handy chair on the far side would have suffered some permanent damage.
"Aaarggghh… my fucking back!", came the predictable yelp of pain laced with profanity.
Pro TIP: Backs only bend one way unless you're a trained gymnast. Always twist around and ignore those glass shards cutting into your skin. At least you won't suffer permanent back damage.
The shit I suffer doing this very dangerous hobby of mine. Once inside I thoroughly convinced myself that this was in fact abandoned.., and looked promising.
It quickly became apparent this was some mass storage facility, they had taken off and left most of the goods behind.
Industrial packaging equipment; Packmat says that to me.
I am not sure what this is, looks like it would be better suited in a laboratory.
So it’s all a little rusty, but serviceable.
We were not the first unwelcome visitors. The goods were spread haphazardly over the floor.
Water was not helping. I had to tip-toe over some areas as the flooding was prominent.
Scrambling down this corridor took me into one almighty big room.
Talk about masses of stuff. I didn’t know where to look. Walking to the other side of the massive room and seeing if there was anything of interest seemed the logical thing to do.
PC Motherboards and cases everywhere.
Some areas looked in decent condition and others like it had been empty for years. The peeling paintwork is a sure sign of dampness.
Scan Computers, but the address is their current office, not the one I was standing in. They have been at that address for years so what the fuck was this place. A place they did PC repairs?
Talk about overwhelming size wise, the snaps do not do it justice.
In the bottom right corner is says Feb 1986. Why would anyone date a sign like that?
The safe was sturdy, but as usual, empty.
I think these are case plates for PCs to stop your computer from being unsightly.
It was tempted to open one, but I loathe looking at junk mail and it had that flavour.
Some of this stuff was brand new.
Those fancy PC cases, all boxed up. No, I was not tempted to nick one!
Someone left the cold water tap on.
This was confusing. I thought we were looking at PC parts, not Asian food.
What's in the boxes with the sealed wrap? I honestly did not look, as this is verging on the edge of what we are about.
Yes, it’s abandoned and yes there’s a lot of money in here. That makes me edgy.
Things were getting stranger as we made out way back to the entrance point. Those PC cases were somehow mutating into strange foodstuffs.
Now we had to get out again through the damn window. After @andiotexplorers almost broke his back exiting, I mastered the art of turning midway and escaped injury.
Just a few marks to my naval area, but that is to be expected. What a place and what a rush! No cops, no Karen’s, it was our lucky day.
Epilogue
What this was still confuses me. Scan International is a large distributor of computer products and I have bought many items from them in the past.
At one point in time, they must have used this building as some kind of storage facility as their logos and documentation were everywhere. The document I found says to me it was their repair centre. Does anyone repair IT gear these days?
Yet their address is NOT this address but their retail facility which is very much alive. Due to the amount of valuable gear, we found inside I am not going to reveal the location as I believe it is still standing and awaiting demolition.

What a messy place!
Yes the big room was very messy. I couldn't help but stand on all the stuff while getting to the other end.
That is very peculiar, some of it looked like a hoarders paradise but then the valuable bits?? The cases?? Yeek. Run away!!
Makes me nervous being in a place like that. It's abandoned but also full of riches.

You have done a good photography of this building and this building is situated in a place that can be called heaven.
I am not so sure of the heaven part. It was a tense explore, and one I was not so comfortable being in.
Ohh, I just pray for you to be relax
Really loving this series of yours! That facility was really messy tho, seems like some of the things can still be used.
I also agree with you, is there anyone in this world who would really include a date for a mere sign like that? (well except tot he one who wrote that haha)
I do see some strange things and only notice them while doing the write-up (such as the sign). Yes, very messy in there.
Looks like, people working there definitely had an attachment with Indian food and spices. And by the way quite a unique hobby. And thanks for the Pro tip 😀
The owners are Indian, and maybe so are all of the staff with what I see!
Looks like an old-style multi-business enterprise centre where they had their returns facility or it could be where they dumped all their 'missing in the post stuff' and insurance jobs lol Scan used to accept Bitcoin as payment I believe. How that place hasn't been robbed blind!
They still accept Bitcoin and were are a very early adaptor. If they kept hold of it all, are now probably quite rich. Returns or repairs is my guess.
You'd think with the market for retro builds and the current chip shortage, they'd e-bay some of that old gear at least!
The last I heard the building was still there, as for the contents that is a different matter. All my content is deliberately months behind.. as I have no idea who is reading it and I would not like thieves taking advantage. Its possible that the effort to sell on ebay is not worth the time.
Well that was all quite bloody confusing. Computers and pickles and spices? What in hell. Personally I would have been tempted to open a bunch of stuff just out of sheer curiosity.
Like many places, I wanted to get the job done and GTFO. You never know who's gonna arrive while you are inside.
Yeah I hear ya. I'm sure if I was actually on site, I would feel more like how you're describing. Do you carry any sort of weapon with you while urban explorifying? I probably would at least have a small canister of mace on me.
No, I don't carry any weapons. The UK is simply not that dangerous.
Holy shit :D what a ton of crap
Yes, mucho crap inside!
Staggering. Entertaining write up!
Was the lighting working inside?
Some pics it looks like the fluorescent ceiling tubes are on
Well done staving off temptation to open up the boxes and packages
The lighting was not working here, but I have been in a couple since were it did. That to me is quite uncomfortable again as it's getting too close to the line of what I do.
Surprised the scrotes haven't had those mother boards away, patience and knowledge, and there are precious metals to extract.
I always wondered what an amazon distribution centre looked like on a busy day
That's probably quite accurate!
yup! 😅
This abondaned place is quite different than the others. First, I though it is a paper mill. Then a computer wholesaler. It is just a mess now.
Yes very different from my usuals. We are back to the regular dropping-apart ones in the next episode!
What a waste... I hope the owners send someone in there to recover that stuff... A lot of it could go to charity.
I have seen it before, it's likely not worth the manpower to do anything about it.
That's a shame, if they had just hauled it out sooner it would have been easy.
Wow what an intriguing and unique treasure trove full of mysteries!
I think you hit the motherlode of mystery there!
Definitely interesting found here.
It was different than the usual places, that are generally falling to pieces.
Suspect that there are valuables in there.
I think you're right and nothing really makes any sense. I would think that somebody is ripping up the company except that everything is ruined, yet still mixed in with good stuff. You said the building is still standing oh, have you ever tried looking up the address to see if it really belongs to them or if somebody is stashing stuff that works there.
I haven't looked. Its not really of an historical value (which is what I prefer), just some 70's tinpot storage place!

Damn I love lost places. There is a pretty big "Documentary"-Series of a German TV channel with a lot of lost places. I am really into this kind of stuff.
I came back to this because I have it up on a bigger screen now.
Sweet Jesus!
That is a freaking mess!!
So the black plastic cases you said were possibly to stop your computer from looking unsightly look very much like memory packaging, although the recessed square is strange? The case is usually flat, with some retaining lugs on each end.
Part of the building was definitely given over to food manufacturing. Some of the equipment there is for squirting gunk into trays/containers, and there's an image of a giant extractor in the middle of the room (The aluminium shield hanging from the ceiling). I suspect there were cookers underneath that at one time.
You've hit the jackpot. You visited two sites at the same time! 🤣
I could have spent hours rummaging around the computer side. Go back, give me more!
I wish you'd have looked inside one or two of those DPD bags because I bet they're items returned under RMA and if they are, then that's what happened to a lot of disappointed customers returns. 🙁
Hopefully its been demolished now, though I don't think so. When it comes to posting places with items of value inside, I am tetchy about it. I don't want thieves using my post to find it for their own gain.
"The Boys" will be round with the van later.
Holy crap, wide a wide array of eclectic ... stuff. Maybe the pickles were for the PC repairmen. It looks like there has been shit there for decades! "Made for Windows 3.1". Oy!
Damn, this place looks like the most "expensive" of all that you have visited. I mean, all this stuff, after all, has a certain value. I don't know how your laws work, but it seems to me that you took a very big risk.
Oh how I missed reading your adventures and expenditures.
This place gives me dooms day vibes though especially the inside. The outsides seems pretty decent judging from the pictures.
