Fails of the Urban Explorer: Made in Liverpool
While wandering the streets of Liverpool several months ago I came across a derelict pub. Nothing new and it appeared to be 'tinned' up so well I didn't even check for access.
The name however had me falling about with laughter and I never thought to look it up unto now.
‘The Cock and Seaman' had been re-branded in 2015, the locals were not impressed and it's already closed and rotting away.
Don't fuck about with the names of old pubs I say..., The Doric was appropriate and if the locals are not going to guzzle your beer there then the only visitors are going to be the likes of me!
Liverpool has been hit and miss, and more the latter of late. I have several unpublished explores and will be writing them up in due course.
The Littlewoods Building
“I know the way in, we did it last week”
@anidiotexplores was confident and had spotted the same climbing receptacle used as an aid but there was nowhere to park and yellow lines were everywhere.
This is one massive old building, and from what I have been told full of empty spaces inside, plus easy to get lost in.
After driving to the other side, we made our way back which was the best part of half a mile.
“That’s the security hut”, mentioned @anidiotexplores as we strolled past the front gate.
I tried not to look but noticed a single car inside.
Talk about a trudge. There was plenty of scope for externals while walking around the white rotting behemoth.
We approached the access point and noticed a silver car hanging around.
“Fucking security, how did they know?”
Climbing the wall would have shown our intentions right away and I was sure there was a sneaky guard in the car with a satisfied smirk on his face.
Sulking, we turned back and what do you know, the car passed us by after making sure it was too much of a drudge to backtrack.
"He's smirking.., did you see that?". It was true and we both saw.
Cunt.
Passing by the front gate, the same car was stationed there. So they have a double shift. A lot of effort to protect little I say.
The Cunard
One long road in this city contains several pubs, unloved and derelict. The Cunard was one, and after appropriating the KFC free car park, we had to investigate.
Too much brush in the way to attempt a climb plus there’s barbed wire that doesn’t photograph very well in the mix.
Between the brickwork and that end-board, you can just fit through if you tug it a bit (below). Walking in there on a mound of uneven bricks was a nightmare to keep upright.
Added in the mix, you need to keep low as there's a major road next to it which made it impossible for me to get any stable shots.
@anidiotexplores made it to a small room expecting full reign, but getting..., a small room unconnected to the pub.
It was like a building site in there, and neither of us fancied scrambling up and down a crumbling building that was about to collapse. Arse.
The Marshall House
A shot in the dark; @anidiotexplores found this one by google map trawling and it looked promising from afar.
The Marshall Building was big, imposing, and very sealed.
Many others had tried to break in and failed. The evidence was clear to see.
Behind it was yet another old wreck and could it be we could get inside?
It was possible by climbing the crumbling brickwork, balancing on that rat-eaten beam, and through the window.
I’m an explorer, not a damn circus performer. Fuck that.
They seal things up well in the land of the scousers. They need to.
The William Shakespeare
I tracked this one down via 28dayslater.com though it was an old report. Inside looked promising, with a snooker table, beer glasses, and countless demands from HMRC to pay tax bills.
The back was a no-go; too much barbed wire circling the top of the wall, although access could have been had from the roof.
The artwork wasn’t bad, though I have seen much better. Liverpool doesn’t appear to be famous for quality graffiti.
"We're in", exclaimed @anidiotexplores tugging at the beer cellar doors. It came open with a huge clang waking the whole neighbourhood.
With a maniacal gleam in his eye, my comrade started down and stopped abruptly.
“Oh fuck, bastard, twat... FLOODED”
How many times is this going to happen? We need Wellington Boots badly. In his haste, he had dipped one foot in and it looked like a soggy mess.
It is at times like these that one appreciates the humble car heater aimed at the feet with the setting of extra-hot turned on full.

Abandoned bars often have many posters but no one dares to go there alone for fear of getting involved in crimes or legal troubles. It's completely dirty, it ressembles to a huge cemetery
It depends which country you are from. No so dangerous here.
oh that's good, the picture gives an other impression.
Great weekend 👍 thanks
I'm watching Liverpool's football match, and suddenly a post about Liverpool 💕
I have yet to pass Anfield, and have been to the city several times.
Getting into the first one would have been epic, it looks really cool. Some sort of factory?
btw, did you upload the wrong image?
Littlewoods were famous for their football pools in the 70's. A pre-curser to gambling cards where you would try and guess the outcome of matches, and win 50p for your efforts.
Confused.., which one?
What was the one where you had to guess where the ball landed on the grid? I always thought that was the pools 😅
This one, coz you were talking about the pub
Yes I see where you are coming from. I didn't take even one shot of the 'Cock and Seaman'. I think we had stopped for a drive-by.. @anidiotexplores had got out to scout and I was turning the car around and saw it.
What a name for a pub!!
I looked this image, it was very Sci-Fi!!
You do need wellies. I've got some smashing ones, Boggs, they ain't cheap but I have had them for over two years now on every terrain imaginable and they are still going strong!
I am going to get some. Have failed on several now due to lack of wellies. Its annoying!
I put is getting them for so long and when I got them I was like what was I delaying for!!
I agree, I'm not an expolorer but my wellies always do the trick in all sorts of situations, brambles etc (usually my exploring is in woodland/rockland terrain, but still saves the calves and keeps the feet dry and protects the toes. @slobberchops
Quality post as usual !
In ya main pic, near that tree is the cover to get into the air raid shelter, take a moveable spanner!!!
Those pubs in bootle are right smack head places, mind you so id liverpool full stop
A ROC post right? Still not done one, but they don't look very exciting. I have visions of someone shutting me in while down there.
Didn't see any this time. @anidiotexplores got chased by one in Manchester last year while trying to get in a derp.
nah its not even an ROC, just an air raid shelter for the employees with original war time drawings on the walls,
This one today looks scary. I hope I won't have Liverpool street nightmares in this pub.
There's a lot of derps in Liverpool, most are sealed up tight.
The pictures are very cool, look original and original...I like this..with so many pictures from different angles, I conclude that these pictures are evidence of scientific facts that have been left alone.
Cool.I like your post
Too many brick laid up in and around the Cunard so as not to let anyone inside.
That Cunard was a right anti-climax, as was the William Shakespeare. You think you have got in, for it to be taken away.
What a coincidence. I was watching a video about the Littlewoods building last night and the people who worked there. I'm not sure there would be too much to see even though it is an epic structure. What a job it must have been checking all the coupons!
Looks like assembly at my old secondary school, nightmare! Someone always fainted. My grandfather religiously did those pools and told me he was going to make me rich. Never happened.. not even 50p!
yeah, my Grandad too and every saturday tea time , we'd be watching the results come in on the teleprinter!
Still going online. Littlewoods, zetters and Vernons combined and then sold up but you can still play. Not the same without a pencil, coupon and a dodgy bloke who comes to pick up your coupons every week!
Some great shots here - thanks for sharing, @slobberchops! Have you got your wellies sorted for your next adventure?
Annabelle
I am planning on buying some and adding them to my car boot. Like the portable ladders, they will be auxiliary equipment.
Sounds like an excellent plan, @slobberchops! I have what I call a "Facilities" bag that I take with me on long journeys, as you can never be too careful, lol! Those portable ladders sound cool...How did you get into exploring like this?
Annabelle 😊
It was long ago, in Malta and started in a bookshop. Are you coming to the Halifax doo?
https://peakd.com/travel/@slobberchops/exploring-malta-mystique-an-abandoned-nightclub-44407b1d6d833est
Ooh, a bookshop! Love wandering around in those...There's one on Morecambe Pier that I can get lost in. What has been your favourite exploration so far?
Yes, Ben and I are heading over to the Halifax meet up in our classic Mercedes, Lady Dorothy. Can't wait!
looks like there was previously another building on the side of the cunard:
from here
Its still there, you can see a small part of it in this pic nearside (below). The one sandwiched in-between with the triangle top is now a large pile of bricks on the other side of the boards. Tough to climb over, and your ankles keep going over.
it's the triangle top one I meant, I guess that's where all the bricks came from.
That littlewoods building is magnificent! A lot of these places have hyper security because the buildings are so unsafe. When I worked up there, the security costs for derelict buildings was enormous and local councils were forever trying to give them to community groups for free as an "asset", simply to no longer have the costs of the security.
What's your ratio of attempts to failures? Do you keep a log of them all? As I've said before, I can enjoy the exterior photography, but I know you want to get in.
2 years ago it was around 65%. Now.. maybe 40%. We have had some bad trips and come away with only 2 or 3 this year. It's always a long day and takes a lot out of me.
Oh! Your amazing pictures on a sunny day!! Absolutely amazing!!
Di you just need wellies, or full hip waders from the fishing outfitters? the latter isn't very discreet, admittedly.
There have been a couple that could have been accessible with regular wellies I think. Though I have been inside more than one with swimming pools (not intended ones). Hyde Library basement was flooded and deep (it looked it!).
Hello, Boelter Mc here
this graffiti is very cool.
I was impressed. Daily inspiration around here!
Hello Mr. Chops, I've just finished enjoying your photos of derelict places and enjoyed them all. There's a certain appeal to crumbling buildings, a mystery to unfold, or echoes of times long gone that linger.
That Littlewoods building resembles a Soviet-Era construction, or so it seems to me, imposing and solid, foreboding.
Anyway, I would like to join in as there is a few places I know around here that may qualify but I'm a little afraid of going there alone. Maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage.
Becca 💗
It is best not to go alone. I still don't like soloing explores, and it's a lot more fun with someone else.
If you start running tours I'll buy a ticket to come with you. 🙃
Famous last words 😥Had you gotten in, it looks like it would have been fun! Do you tell anyone where to look should you get in a tight spot?
The climbing aid was still there, and the security bloke didn't appear to note its relevance. They are not the brightest sparks.
Only if soloing, and that's rare for me.
Well one of you should, in case you both end up in the same trap 😂
It really doesn't make sense hiring security if you just plan to let it rot?
what is in the barrels on the last pictures? beer? you need to go back and check :D
Probably slop!
very old =)
I like graffiti walls!
I suppose it is to be expected in Liverpool for the vacated premises to be locked down like Fort Knox. That big building would be perfect for a drugs operation. You may have been minutes from your maker if you didn't see the security guard.
I often think about how many close shaves I have avoided.
When I hear and read Liverpool's writings, for me Asian people are only familiar with their football club.
But it turns out that there is also a corner of Liverpool city like this. Your post is quite informative x)
