Mushroom Monday - Mundane Monday
Here are a few mundane mushroom finds for #mushroommonday
As usual the shelf fungi is around everywhere. Some of these can make a nice platform for woodpeckers to make a hole under or a squirrel can use it a shelf to sit on while eating an acorn.
Squirrel is giving a warning about the next mushroom. Eat it and you'll wish you were torn apart by a hawk instead...
These little guys are usually still around when the first frost or snow hits. They kind of resemble Flammulina veluptides in color on the cap.
But these are actually deadly galerina aka Galerina marginata. So if you are foraging for winter mushrooms be sure to check the spore print and gill colors. Spore print on deadly galerinas are rusty and the gills are rusty brown. On winter mushrooms the gills are light yellow with a white spore print and they usually have a somewhat slimy cap compared to the deadly galerinas.
Now for a messed up muck. I think this is some form of polypore that might even have some an additional parasitic mold or fungi on it (the darker gray part).
Here is a nice mundane fungi I see all the time. This is dog vomit slime mold aka
Fuligo septica.
Here is some dog vomit slime mold that has been dried out by the sun. I mostly see this on landscaping wood chips and people don't really like it in their garden.
This is a super old version of dog vomit slime mold. Sadly it is not easy to get rid of other than trying to shovel it out of your wood chips when you see it starting to grow.
Now for a really boring looking crust polypore. I'm guessing it is some kind of tooth polypore. There are so may variants of these types of fungi here and I usually ignore them to try and fine more exciting stuff. But as the winter drags on I'll be forced to look more and more at this type of long lasting fungi. Just three more months of drudgery and finally the fun fungi will be out again...
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Nice finds for winter mushroom hunting...even if you had to use a squirrel shot for filler lol we have some dog vomit in the wood chips along our drive. Icky looking stuff. Maybe I'll try shovelling it out next time around. I just avoided it last time I saw it 😊
I suppose dog vomit doesnt harm the garden its just aesthetically not pleasing. It does have anticancer compounds in it so it can be useful.
The photo of the squirrel is very beautiful, it gives the impression that it is trying to catch something
It poked its head around the tree at me like that because I was making squirrel barking noises at it lol. I must have dissed it in its own language and it wanted to come back at me.
hahaha you always make me laugh with your comments on your images
