Fungi Friday - Mushrooms in the Hand Part 4

Here is part 4 of Mushrooms in the Hand for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Here is a harvest I collected in 2021 in the upper peninsula. The bright orange ones are lobster mushrooms (fungi growing on fungi). There are also a couple chanterelles and a bay bolete.

Here is a hedge hog mushroom. They have a thick but brittle texture and have a mild taste. I would rate these as good beginner mushrooms to forage because of their identifying feature of spiky gills under the cap.

Here is a choice edible called a black trumpet chanterelle. They don't look very edible as they are thin and dry similar to dried leaf. But if you soak them in water then cook them they have a nice deep rich mushroom flavor and they are easy to dry to store for later.

Look at this beauty. These are scarlet waxycaps with a Latin name of Hygrocybe coccinea. These are edible but they don't have much taste and there are some poisonous lookalikes so I would avoid them. At best they are good for a garnish on the side of a dish.

Here is a tiny little waxycap. You can find them on the forest floor under dead leaves.

Look at these tiny little mushrooms growing out of an acorn. These are called Hymenoscyphus fructigenus.

Here is a baby unidentified fungal organism probably in the amanita family. It is just past its egg form at this point.

20200820_070851_copy.jpg
Here is a coral fungi in the family Ramaria. I suspect it is old Ramaria formosa. Sadly these are not edible and will cause stomach aches if eaten.

20200820_122649_copy.jpg
Here is a tiny bay bolete with a Latin name of Imleria badia. These are edible but I typically only find one or two growing in random places so I've never been able to create a decent meal out of them.

Here is a nice symmetrical gilled mushroom that looks like it is in the Clitocybe family. Some edible mushrooms like the wood blewit is in the Clitocybe family but this one lacks the purple color of the edible wood blewit. Who knows if its poisonous or not.

Now for a random monarch butterfly I found. It looks like it has traveled quite a way and it was cold in the morning so I was able to pick it up before it got warmed in the sun.

That's all for this #fungifriday :-)

The monarch was cold in the morning, its a good tip if you ever want to photograph butterflies. Just go out in the early morning when they are still cold and they will sit still for photos and even handling.

The red one look really nice on the forest floor. When you cook them they turn gray and they don't really taste like anything. But as a garnish to a meal they would add a nice decoration.

I would never guess that scarlet waxycaps is edible. Not with this colour. Beautiful mushroom!
And the acorn ones are definitely the smallest I have seen today. And recently in general. Adorable :)

They don't taste like much so they are rarely listed as edible, but they aren't poisonous either. At best they are good for decorative garnish.

Wow, the tiny ones growing out of the acorn are super cute! Nature is amazing :)

And how lucky, the butterfly on your hand. Last summer I had an encounter with a butterfly, it came to my fingertips as this your one. It was a very nice and pleasing feeling, having a fragile creature so close and without fear 🦋

I wonder if you had a red admiral butterfly on your fingertip. They are the friendliest butterfly.

Yes :) it was on my hand for some time, minutes, and flew away, but later, it came back again to my hand! I was so happy with that :))

Be glad it was a red admiral and not a purple emperor (the corpse butterfly). No one wants one of those landing on them after its been sitting on a dead animal somewhere lol.

The blue is definitely photo worthy. Fortunately the red admirals just go to flowers and mud nothing too gross.
