Feathered Friday - New Arrivals

A bunch of goslings hatched today on #featheredfriday by @melinda010100

Looks like the nests around the lake are already hatching. These guys must have just emerged a day or two ago as I didn't see them last time I was walking around the lake.

They look hilarious at this age, like golden cottonballs with webbed feet.

The parents kept a watchful eye out on me. They were peaceful probably because I was one of the few people not walking a dog.

They are super gawky right now and do a bit of stumbling around. But fortunately for the parents they are already programmed to eat grass.

They basically eat anything that's in front of them in a super clumsy way.

Thankfully the rains earlier this week make the new grass nice and tender for them.

Hopefully some more of the nests hatch soon so they'll have strength in numbers. A couple of hawks are nesting nearby so I suspect some of these guys will fall prey to them eventually.

They better stay close together in a group and not wander too far away. I suspect they roost on the floating islands on the lake at night so they should be safe from foxes.

The parents are constantly on guard for domesticated dogs, hawks and foxes. They don't seem to bothered by cameramen fortunately. I'll be keeping tabs on their growth, hopefully most will survive this year.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

My neighbor has one nesting on her balcony right now, I'd better check and see if they've hatched yet... As for lambs they are super cute, did you do a post on them yet?

Aawww yep, you better check it out if they are hatched.
I haven’t been able to go there yet. From here they are just white dots. So no good for photos. The mountain looks close by, but is further away to get to. If I find time in between packing… I will go and take some photos. But first… I have to get ready for the movers that come Wednesday. 📦📦

I think the coyotes might be smart enough to do something like that. Though they still haven't learned how to swim. I saw one eyeing some ducks the other day and all he could do is sit on the side of the lake looking at them.

Those little guys are so fun, especially the picture where they look like walking fluff balls!

Thanks, if only there was a bird species that would stay that size with fuzz everyone would have them as pets.

I'm not so sure, chicks can be very time intensive for some people

They look like ink caps of some kind. I would definitely not microwave them lol. And these guys don't dehydrate well either.

I don't see any blue bruising on the stem so you are probably right that they are Psilocybe antillarum. I read they are not commonly eaten and have no psychoactive compounds. But be careful if you have not eaten them before don't eat large amounts as some can cause upset stomach. Maybe just give one a tiny taste test first at most to see what happens. If you want to preserve them for later I would just dehydrate them on a low heat in the oven or a dehyrator.
