Early Spring Visitors

I got a visit from the sandhill cranes.

I was taking the baby on a stroller walk and saw a formation of sandhill cranes.

Tgis time they were flying low enough to get decent photos of them.

Usually you only see them as tiny dots up in the sky. They are quite loud though so you can hear them clearly.

They eventually find a prairie to pair up and have babies. In a month or so I might go out and see if any chicks have emerged.

Part of the reason I noticed the cranes was because I was taking photos of starlings nesting on my neighbor's building.
P1010873 copy.jpg
They might be the ones responsible for pecking this hole in the side of the building.
P1010875 copy.jpg
I'll be keeping an eye on them to see if any chicks are poking their heads out of the side of the building.

Here is a nice wild starling not punching holes into the sides of buildings.

Looks like this dead branch has helped raise many generations of starlings.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

When these events happen you have to take advantage of the opportunity, it's good that you had the camera on hand to capture the passage of these birds, I think you got great shots here :)

I've learned the hard way, where I see some awesome birds but don't have my camera... now I bring it anywhere

Starlings are obnoxiously loud. They used to hang out on the roof and eaves of shopping centers in Cali. Big loud groups. We also went out in the central valley to see the sand hill cranes pass through.

The cranes really love heading west for winter. We would watch them out in the boonies of Wilcox AZ. Now I get to see the baby ones up here in Illinois. So far the starlings seem to like the building next to us more. Maybe they can peck through the material better.

That's a pretty good shot. I bet it was chortling loudly, one scared the heck out of me in the prairie grass when I didn't see it. It started squawking loudly with no warning lol.

Haha those starlings used to not live here until a lady who loved them brought them over here. Now they are everywhere lol.

They are noisy, eat all the fruit on the trees, and poop on the remaining fruit right below the fruit they ate. Afterwards there are more for me or if there are some fruits left I don't touch them because of the mutiny of the droppings which pile up on them

Yikes, the farmers here don't like them either. What kind of fruit are they stealing from you?

What lovely shots you got of the cranes! Love the play of colors along the formation.
