Crane Dance
Here are a couple of sandhill cranes doing a dance.
I heard a loud croaking noise near a farm and decided to check out the field. These two were doing their courtship dance.
When I first heard about this dance with the cranes I figured only the male would dance.
But it appears both of them took part in the dance.
They croaked loudly too while dancing. It must be tough to be this gawky while trying to dance.
My camera's focus was having trouble trying to get a clear shot while dancing so instead it decided to focus on the ground.
I moved around to try and get them both in the center focus, but now I have one with its head hidden.
Now after their dancing it is time to start grazing for small insects and rodents to eat.
They seem to take turns pecking the ground, as one pecks the ground the other looks up.
I stuck around a bit longer but they didn't do anymore dancing. Now they are just patrolling the field for food.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
It's always nice to be able to witness nature's shows! The common crane visits the country in the winter time, will try and see them again next year. Never witnessed a courtship dance, but they sure are loud! :)
I wonder if they all do the courtship dance at this time of year or if its just a random event when they meet the right one?
I think courtship dances are just during reproductive season; males will probably try their luck until they find a receptive female. ;)

It's been decades since I saw sandhill cranes dance. It was on the ranch in Florida in the early 80's. Very cool they were so near to you.
We have plenty of cranes up here but I've never seen the dance before. I also used to see tons of them in Wilcox Arizona but they never danced there as they were just collecting in large numbers to eat brine shrimp.

Judging from the picture, the dance played by this pair of cranes is very exciting.
They were quite loud too, that's the only reason I was able to locate them doing the dance lol.
With ankles that long I'm surprised they don't sprain them dancing like that.
Thanks :-)
