Today I am back to my blog, to share part of the wonders that I can see and enjoy on my backyard, I will tell you about some insects with great value as pollinators, and these are: Butterflies.
I will not expand on explanations of a scientific nature regarding butterflies, since it would be to bring content that is very present in electronic pages, blogs and specialized bibliography, etc. ; however, I will tell you about what I observe in my green areas.
The first photo I want to share with you is of a caterpillar, which, as we all know, after a metamorphosis process will give rise to a butterfly, (first it is an egg, then a caterpillar, then a pupa or chrysalis, and then a butterfly). This caterpillar is about 7 centimeters long, so I infer that the insect it will become will be large. I found it perched on one of the leaves of the youngest mandarin tree and its size captured my attention, and I also noticed that it looked back at me (perhaps it is just my perception); the truth is that as I saw that it was not eating the leaves of the plant, I photographed it and left it there alone. It should be noted that the next day I saw it again, this time with more subdued colors, and then I didn't see it anymore, probably a bird ate it.
In another of the outings to the solar, already at sunset, I saw something beautiful, and it is this butterfly sleeping or resting. I had never seen these insects at rest before, except for the winter butterflies that rest on the walls; however, I saw this beauty hanging from a small branch of a pomegranate tree and I found it beautiful, besides, it was very still, which allowed me to capture all its details in this series of photographs, especially its head, the small duct they use to feed folded in a perfect circle (spirithromp), its antennae, legs, eyes, wings and abdomen.
In this month of July it is common to see butterflies in their courtship dance, something very beautiful indeed; even in the fields it is possible to observe clouds of butterflies resting on the roads where there are small water wells, I guess drinking the vital liquid. The large presence of these insects in my backyard is due to the fact that the rains make the plants bloom, as is the case of the lemon balm (Lippia alba), which shows its tiny lilac and pink flowers that butterflies and bees like. Here you can see the sleeping butterfly and a smaller butterfly with pale beige, gray and brown wings enjoying the flowers.
This other orange butterfly, I saw her basking in the midday sun on this fallen olive tree trunk. It had been a bit chilly that day, (although it's hard to get cold here, the weather is very warm), and she was I guess raising her body heat in the sunlight. I thought she looked really beautiful.
Here I end this post, which I have prepared in order to remind readers that all insects and creatures of nature are important for ecosystems. Butterflies, besides the beauty they offer with their presence, are important pollinators, necessary for the process of fruiting to occur.
