Once again I'm on my bike, I've started to like cycling. It wasn't always like this. For at least 30 years it was more of a love-hate relationship between me and my bike. But everything changes sooner or later. I was actually more of a runner than a cyclist until...

Naja, bis etwas in mein Leben getreten ist das man wohl Schicksal nennen könnte. Es veränderte den @siphon vom Läufer zum Radler. Vor diesem weltveränderndem Tag kam das Fahrrad zum Einsatz solange ich noch zu jung für einen Führerschein war. Danach war das Fahrradfahren eine Mischung aus, es ist sinnvoll und gut Wege mit einem Rad anstatt mit motorisierten Fahrzeugen zu unternehmen und das Fahrrad muss mal wider bewegt werden.

Well, until something came into my life that you could call fate. It changed @siphon from a runner to a cyclist. Before that world-changing day, the bike was used while I was still too young for a driving licence. After that, cycling was a mixture of, it makes sense and is good to do things on a bike instead of motorised vehicles, and the bike needs to be moved again.

Ich habe ein Fahrrad das über 30 Jahre alt ist. Das ist mein Glück. Es ist mein Glück weil ich zum Zeitpunkt des Kaufs jung und kurzzeitig begeistert war von der Idee des Radfahrens das alle Wege in die Welt öffnet. Ich habe mein ganzes Konfirmandengeld genommen, einen zusätzlichen Kredit meiner Eltern über 1000 DM und hab alles für das Fahrrad auf den Kopf gehauen.

I have a bicycle that is over 30 years old. That is my luck. It is my good fortune because at the time of purchase I was young and briefly enthusiastic about the idea of cycling that opens up all paths to the world. I took all my confirmation money, an additional credit of 1000 Deutsche Mark from my parents and spent it all on the bike.

Wenn man jung ist hat man noch Träume. Man glaubt mit der einen Sache wird sich die Welt komplett ändern, in der Folgewoche ist es dann ein anderer entzündeter Gedanke der ein vor Begeisterung Hormone ausschütten lässt. Jedenfalls habe ich ein fast semiprofessionelles Bike erstanden. Der eigentliche Punkt ist: Das Fahrrad hatte nie einen Defekt abgesehen von Verschleißartikel.

When you are young, you still have dreams. You think one thing will change the world completely, the next week it's another inflamed thought that makes you pour out hormones of excitement. Anyway, I bought an almost semi-professional bike. The real point is: the bike has never had a defect apart from wearing parts.

Ich habe bis heute nicht mit dem Gedanken gespielt ein neues Rad zu kaufen, trotzdem habe ich ein fast neues Trekkingbike Zuhause stehen... Defekt!

I haven't thought about buying a new bike until today, yet I have an almost new trekking bike at home.... Defective!

Zu diesem Fahrrad bin ich auf Umwege und ohne meine aktive Zustimmung gekommen. Ein Freund eines Verwandten hat bei einem zwanglosen Zusammensitzen mitbekommen das ich ganz gerne Paella koche und die nötige Ausrüstung in Originalteilen nutze. Also hat er mich kurzerhand zu seinem Geburtstagskoch ernannt, was ich zugegebenermaßen gern angenommen habe. Die Paella ist prima angekommen und da wir keine Bezahlung ausgemacht haben stand er dann plötzlich mit einem Trekkingbike das ca. 200 km gelaufen war vor meiner Haustüre.

I got this bike in a roundabout way and without my active consent. During a casual get-together, a friend of a relative found out that I like to cook paella and use the necessary equipment in original parts. So he unceremoniously appointed me as his birthday cook, which I gladly accepted. The paella went down well and since we didn't agree on payment, he was suddenly standing in front of my door with a trekking bike that had run about 200 km.

Kein teures Bike ca. 400 €. Er kann 3 Fahrräder sein Eigen nennen darunter ein hochwertiges Trekkingbike und eben das billige. Dieses billige kaufte er nur wegen einer vorübergehenden Situation. Er arbeitete und wohnte ein Jahr lang immer wieder 400km entfernt von zuhause und so kaufte er sich das Schnäppchen-bike.

Not an expensive bike, about 400 €. He can call 3 bikes his own, including a high-quality trekking bike and the cheap one. He only bought this cheap one because of a temporary situation. He worked and lived 400 km away from home for a year and so he bought the bargain bike that he no longer needs now.

Ich bin genau 3 mal mit den Trekkingbike gefahren dann brach ein Pedal aus dem Gewinde. Ich nehme an das es schon vorher nicht richtig befestigt war da das Gewinde nicht mehr nutzbar war, das Pedal war nicht mehr einschraubbar. So steht es nun schon ca. 3 Jahre ungenutzt mit dem einen verbliebenen Pedal in einer Ecke. Als ich vor einigen Tagen in einem Fahrradgeschäft war schaute ich nach Ersatz, kostet 30 € plus. Keine Ahnung ob sich das gerade lohnt, da ich mein altes Mountainbike immer bevorzuge. Zudem hat das Billigfahrrad noch andere Probleme, z. B. Springt die Kette gern vom größten Ritzel hinten runter zwischen die Speichen und den Ritzeln und verklemmt sich dann so heftig das man einiges an Muskelkraft aufwenden muss um die Kette wieder heraus zu bekommen.

I rode the trekking bike exactly 3 times and then a pedal broke out of the thread. I assume that it was not properly fixed before because the thread was no longer usable, the pedal could no longer be screwed in. So it has now been standing unused for about 3 years with the one remaining pedal in a corner. When I went to a bicycle shop a few days ago, I looked for a replacement, it cost 30 € plus. I don't know if it's worth it, as I always prefer my old mountain bike. The cheap bike also has other problems, e.g. the chain likes to jump from the largest sprocket down between the spokes and the sprockets and then gets jammed so badly that you have to use a lot of muscle power to get the chain out again.

Auf jeden Fall mag ich mein altes Bike und würde es niemals gegen ein neues tauschen. Inzwischen mag ich sogar das Fahrrad fahren, das liegt auch an einer realistischeren Einschätzung meiner selbst. Fahrrad fahren ist nicht einfach Sport für mich sondern es bringt ein Lebensgefühl mit das ich nicht unbedingt mit verschwitzten Klamotten einhergehen lassen will. Ich rede trotzdem nicht von Motorrädern (elektr.). Man muss manchmal einfach von seinem Ross absteigen und verlangsamen, und siehe da, die Welt sieht plötzlich ganz anders aus.

In any case, I like my old bike and would never replace it with a new one. In the meantime, I even like cycling, which is also due to a more realistic view on myself. Riding a bike is not just a sport for me, it brings an attitude to life that I don't necessarily want to be accompanied by sweaty clothes. Nevertheless, I'm not talking about motorbikes (electric). Sometimes you just have to step down off the pedestal and slow down, and suddenly the world looks very different.
