Passing through Torrita di Siena, I stumbled upon a surprise!
Hello dear friends,
Today I want to share some photos I took in a place that I believe I already shared here back in November, a place that has garnered quite a bit of success on the blog, which undoubtedly pleased me greatly.
I'm talking about Torrita di Siena, a beautiful municipality located in the province of Siena with a population of just under 7,000 inhabitants. But this time during my exploration, always on foot through the streets of the village, I was very lucky because I happened to be there during the "palio di somari," a donkey race that takes place from March 16th to March 24th every year. It's a big celebration that attracts people not only from all over Italy but also from around the world, and we can somewhat compare it to the more famous Palio di Siena, except in this case, donkeys are used instead of horses.
Of course, I couldn't attend the palio because I was there for work-related reasons and had limited time, but I managed to take some photos of how beautifully decorated this charming village was. Each neighborhood had its own flag and banner displayed during this festival.
So, I immersed myself in the streets of this beautiful place, which I must say I quite like as a village because I noticed that people around here are very active and they care a lot about preserving popular traditions over time.
I don't know if I've already told you, but Torrita di Siena is located in the western part of the Valdichiana, and its most beautiful part is the historic center, which is enclosed within walls dating back to 1100. Naturally, I also visited the Romanesque church of San Flora and Lucilla; I can never resist visiting these art treasures.
In conclusion, after strolling through the streets of the town and experiencing the festive atmosphere that can be felt at this particular time of year, I sadly had to return to work. I regret not seeing the palio, although I did catch some rehearsals by musicians and flag-wavers.
That's why I wanted to share this place once again because I hope that one day you'll get to participate in this beautiful palio, which is no less exciting than the one in Siena.
See you in my next post, and I wish you all a wonderful day!
