"Discovering the Serenity of Lago dell'Accessa: A Hidden Gem in Tuscany"
Hello dear friends,
Most likely, this will be my last post of the week. This weekend, I'll definitely dedicate myself to exploring a bit. In fact, I'll be participating in some very interesting guided tours, so I'll be able to share the photos with you here, which makes me very happy.
But today, in particular, I don't want to talk about the usual Tuscan village. Instead, I'd like to talk about something more naturalistic. Probably, many people don't know about this place because I discovered it only a few weeks ago. But I find it very interesting as a natural oasis. So today, I'll share with you some photos I took at Lago dell'Accessa, a somewhat peculiarly named place but a very beautiful spot, as you will see.
The lake is located about 10 km from Massa Marittima, practically an oasis of peace and beauty nestled in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, something you might not expect to find there.
You can already see from the photos its crystal-clear waters surrounded by a Mediterranean vegetation, which certainly make it a very interesting place for those who want to escape the daily hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature.
I don't think swimming is allowed in the lake, but from what I understand, it's a karstic lake with depths reaching up to 50 meters, fed by the Bruna River.
I read an informative panel near the lake which suggests that the origins of this lake are unknown. It is hypothesized that there was a collapse of the terrain over an underground spring, a phenomenon quite common in this area of Tuscany, known for its many springs.
On the same informational board, it indicated that the name of this lake—a rather peculiar name—derives from the fact that perhaps ancient propitiatory rituals related to fire were performed here. Even now, it seems like a perfect spot for a fire. Moreover, I noticed benches set up by the municipality for picnicking, making it a very suitable place for families.
When I visited, I noticed many people hiking or biking along the trails around the lake. I limited myself to taking some photos and spent a few minutes admiring the view.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, this could be the perfect location, as I observed numerous bird species here. I also saw some people fishing, so that seems to be allowed.
I think a great activity here would be to take a canoe trip. I read that it's possible in the summer, although swimming is strictly prohibited.
Another aspect that fascinated me, as a history and archaeology enthusiast, is that near this lake, remains of an ancient Etruscan settlement have been found. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time that day to visit the ruins of the tombs and this Etruscan civilization that has always fascinated me. However, if you have the chance to visit, you can explore these ancient ruins, which is always an exciting thing to do in such places.
Lastly, the entrance to the lake is free, but I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes if you plan to walk, and bringing water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially because the sun is quite strong here even from spring onwards.
I hope introducing you to this little gem of Tuscany has been interesting for you. Thank you in advance for the time you've dedicated to reading this. I hope you enjoyed the photos, and I hope one day you'll be able to visit this place! See you soon!
