Discovering the Medieval Charm of Sillico, Tuscany
Hello dear friends!!
This past weekend, while staying with a friend in Tuscany, she insisted on taking me to a place I had never been before. We decided to organize a trip there for the weekend, knowing we wouldn’t encounter many people.
The village in question is located in the province of Lucca, about 700 meters above sea level, in a beautiful hilly setting. It’s called Sillico, and to be honest, I had passed by it about a month ago or rather, I had seen it from a distance, but I didn’t have a guide like my friend with me.
The first thing that strikes you when you arrive in this beautiful village is the stone houses, which are quite old, giving the place a medieval feel. The first thing I did was wander through these beautiful alleys, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys and the Apuan Alps.
There are still numerous medieval remnants, including a beautiful entrance gate and a church dedicated to Saint Lawrence the Deacon, which, fortunately, was open this time, so I visited the interior. The inside is very beautiful, colorful, and adorned with various paintings by local artists, making it a lovely place of worship.
When I stepped outside, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful flags of the village hanging outside, something that is very noticeable in the medieval villages of Tuscany. It’s always so nice to get lost in the winding alleys of these places, sadly noticing some houses in poor condition and total abandonment, pausing to admire the landscape—life truly moves slowly here.
I also noticed that many trails start from here, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in nature. Every year, a Renaissance festival takes place here—more like a medieval festival—where the atmosphere of the past is recreated. It’s really wonderful to find these architectural remnants that take us back to a bygone era, especially for someone like me who loves history.
I hope you enjoyed the photos I shared, and as always, that I was able to introduce you to a new place. See you in my next post! I wish you all a good day!!
