"Discovering Hidden Marvels: Romanesque Beauty in Santa Maria di Portonovo and the Tower of Bosis"
Hello dear friends,
First of all, I want to start this post by thanking you for the daily support and the numerous comments you leave under my posts. These things make me very happy because it means that there is indeed interest in what I share. So today, I would like to share some photos that I noticed I hadn't posted here yesterday, from a beautiful place in the Marche region, in the province of Ancona, called Portonovo. I had the opportunity to visit two very interesting things there, in addition to the beautiful beach and the splendid sea of the Marche.
I immediately visited the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, and fortunately, I found it open. This beautiful church is situated in a privileged position between the sea and Mount Conero. As you can see from the photos, it is a Romanesque architecture, probably built by Benedictine monks between the 11th and 12th centuries. The church has a Latin cross plan with three semicircular apses. What struck me the most is the interior, which is sober and bright, with yellow and white stone flooring. This is undoubtedly a place to visit for those who love history, art, nature, and for those seeking a moment of peace and meditation, which can certainly be found in this place. I am always fascinated by the churches I visit in Italy because, artistically, they represent a very important heritage that must be preserved. Unfortunately, as I have mentioned in several posts here, many of these churches are in a state of total abandonment, which is certainly a very sad thing.
The other thing I visited, which I found open to the public even though it is a private bed and breakfast, is the Tower of Bosis, a sighting tower built in 1716 by order of a pope to defend the coast. Surely, in the past, there were various enemy incursions and pirate attacks. It is not very large, with a square shape, but it turns out to be the tallest in the Portonovo area. It undoubtedly offers a splendid view of the sea. As I mentioned, I couldn't climb to the top because it has now been turned into a bed and breakfast. So, if you ever plan to come here on vacation, I recommend staying inside.
This has always been an important place for intellectuals of the time who would gather here, serving as a kind of summer residence. It was frequented by intellectual artists, including Gabriele D'Annunzio, and it is called the Tower of Bosis because it was purchased by the poet Adolfo De Bosis towards the end of the 19th century. For me, it was a great discovery, and it's always wonderful to share these hidden gems, which are not always visitable or only open on certain occasions.
I thank you for the time you have dedicated to reading my post. I hope, as usual, it has been interesting, and I hope you can visit this place sooner or later in your life.
See you soon and have a great day, everyone!

The church of Santa Maria di Portonovo is very good as it is situated between the sea and Mount Conero. A calm atmosphere is also found at such a place. The church is also very beautiful.
I'm glad to hear that you find the church itself to be beautiful.

The church looks so nice! Can’t believe it was abandoned already. Too sad indeed
Yes, it's always disheartening to see beautiful and historically significant buildings abandoned. The reasons behind such abandonments can vary, and it often involves a combination of factors, including changes in demographics, economic decline, or shifts in community priorities. Abandoned churches, in particular, carry a sense of melancholy, as they were once vibrant centers of community and worship.
