A Journey Through Time: Discovering a Forgotten Tuscan Village

Hello dear friends,

It is with great pleasure that I return to write here on the community. This has been a very busy week for me, but I managed to carve out some free time. Having returned to Tuscany, I was able to visit a new place in this beautiful region—a new village where I took some photos to share with you all.

The place is Petrognano, a small village in the municipality of Barberino Tavernelle. It's not entirely new to me, as there’s a guesthouse where I once spent a night after my car decided to break down and leave me stranded.

But this time, I had the opportunity to explore this place more thoroughly. Unfortunately, I must say that I found part of this village practically abandoned. It’s said that this place has ancient origins, with stories that even Charlemagne passed through here in the distant year 700 A.D. The village may have even older origins.

Apart from that, it was scorching hot this week, and as you can see from the photos, everything was practically dried out, with a risk of fire.

This place isn't a well-defined village; it's more of a cluster of houses, or more likely, what's left of the village. Fortunately, sometimes people buy these houses to turn them into bed and breakfasts or perhaps rent them out on Airbnb. This isn't a bad thing, as it gives life back to the area.

I wandered around these practically abandoned houses, and I have to say that they struck me not only architecturally but also because of their beautiful location, completely surrounded by nature and olive trees.

I noticed that some of the homes were inaccessible because they were cordoned off, probably because they’re at risk of collapse. I also discovered something online: once upon a time, this village was surrounded by ancient walls, only a part of which remains. The rest was destroyed in the 1200s when the Florentines conquered these lands.

Walking around these places, you are completely immersed in these artistic beauties. I didn’t encounter anyone during my walk, making the experience even more special.

In conclusion, I was able to admire this place during my few hours of freedom from work. I hope these places, as always, are appreciated and valued. It was really nice to take some photos to share with you here.

See you in my next post, and as usual, I wish you all a good day!

The buildings still look strong as from your photographs, and it feels like stepping back in time to the old generation when everything was simpler. Every stone and street is holding its own story. I really enjoy reading this!

It is always cool to walk in these kinds of villages, even if a part of it is abandoned it surely is interesting to feel the journey through time. Those old stone walls and buildings give a mystical vibe to a place ;)

It looks like a beautiful ancient village, Italy is beautiful, I liked to go there on my holidays but it is too hot for me the last years in the summer time. Hopefully when my kids grow older I can return before or after summer.
Very pretty pictures, thank you for sharing!
