Troy Ounces, what is it?

It is useful to know the amount of Precious Metal content in each bullion. One term that trips up many is the troy ounce. The troy ounce is a confusing term for many people.

Precious metals are weighed using the traditional troy weight system rather than the more known "avoirdupois" units used when weighing other items.

IMG_8590.JPG

Avoirdupois ounces are used to measure items such as salt, sugar, and coffee. The term avoirdupois literally translates to "goods of weight" and is the unit of measurement used in the United States to weigh practically everything other than precious metals.

If you put a 1 oz gold coin on a regular store scale, you'd find that it's around 10% heavier than an ounce of meat or vegetable. The ounce measurements are not the same.

A troy ounce of silver or gold is heavier and contains more precious metal than an avoirdupois ounce.

A standard ounce weighs 28.35 grams and a troy ounce weighs 31.1 grams. It may not appear to be significant, yet the troy system allows for greater precision. A pound is 16 standard ounces while it is 12 troy ounces. This difference isn’t noticeable, but it allows you to accurately weigh coins and bars that are tiny or thin.

Always keep the troy ounce in mind when purchasing for gold and silver. If you buy a 1/10 oz gold coin, the dealer will most likely quote it at roughly 30% less per troy ounce than a one troy ounce gold coin. This is because there is less gold in a smaller coin.

Very good information @silversaver888!🤗
I have also run across precious metal rounds that were marked “ One Pound”.
When I placed this round on a Troy scale, it actually showed 16 Oz…🤔
So we do have discrepancies coming from different Silver mints…….
Something to watch out for.
if in doubt weigh your coin …. 😇

It is best to weigh our coins!
You would think the mints would know better, @silvertop!

Very true @silversaver888!🤔
I only discovered this when purchasing silver rounds at my LCS…….
even though they were stamped, they always put them on the scale.
I have run into this discrepancy several times !😲

Lots of love to you. Blessings.

Great post! I guess we could just all go to the metric system but where's the fun in that? I had forgotten the history, thanks for refreshing my memory!

Real complex are the Kruger rand and American Eagle where 1 Troy ounce of gold is included and - on top - a bit of copper.....

Not so complex, my friend. The American Gold Eagle's composition is 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and the balance copper . It weighs more than 1 troy ounce at 1.0909 troy ounces (33.931 g). The same is true for the smaller sizes: the 1/2 ounce contains 0.5000 gold troy ounce and weighs 0.5455 troy ounce (16.966 g), the 1/4 oz contains 0.2500 gold troy ounce and weighs 0.2727 troy ounce (8.483 g).; the 1/10 oz contains 0.1000 gold troy ounce and weighs 0.1091 troy ounce (3.393 g).

Ever heard of a Troy gram ? I got some coming from China 🤣

Don't we love to be old fashioned when it comes to standards around precious metals. Sometime traditional methods are best. Then you got the Chinese fully into the Metric system when they changed their Pandas to 30 grams rather than the ounce. Every time I buy a Panda I felt they were ripping me off a gram.
I'll still buy the old Panda 😉

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

That's the Chinese Panda, sis! No doubt they are benefitting from it!
We're getting only 0.9645 ounce, when we should be getting 31.1034768
Hugs and kisses, sis 🤗

Back in the day there were scammers in all the magazines selling one pound silver coins. They were using the Avoirdupois scale instead of the troy ounce scale making boat loads of money on people who didn’t know the difference. When I had an LCS people used to bring them in and I’d watch and listen to the owner trying to explain it…..

Hahaha, I would have been fooled at the onset of stacking if I hadn't read about it in the first place.
There is learning to do if you want to stack, and I continue to learn!

I normally like measurement systems. I dance back and forth between the US system and metric. I even explain to people the differences between US units and British Imperial. Going into Japanese traditional units is also no problem.

But... Troy ounces. I just don't get. It'd be so much easier just to switch to grams...

I started stacking knowing the difference, so it is like a no-brainer, hehehe!

If a silver piece/round is marked 1 oz and not 1 ozt, it is good to weigh it. Weigh all your silver and gold anyway, hehehe.

I have known more than one person who is constantly confused with measurement systems. I change everything to the metric system so as not to get any surprises.

I know I get confused with measurement systems all the time, but this Troy weight system is new to me. Now, I have to always remember that this is the system that precious metals are measured. New lesson for the day, thank you for sharing.
