Day 12: Twelve Days of Christmas

Finally! The 12th coin on my Christmas list! (But, what will I do the rest of my list? I have tons more, lol!!)

1900 Lafayette Silver Dollar Commemorative

To mark the erection of a monument honoring General Lafayette in Paris, France, the Lafayette Dollar was introduced in 1900. The silver dollar coin was the first commemorative coin produced by the US Mint and was also the first to have a portrait of a US president. The silver dollar coin features a bust of the U.S. President George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.

Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, Marquis de La Fayette[a] (6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), known in the United States as Lafayette (/ˌlɑːfiːˈɛt, ˌlæf-/, French: [lafajɛt]), was a French aristocrat, freemason, and military officer who volunteered to join the Continental Army, led by General George Washington, in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette was ultimately permitted to command Continental Army troops in the decisive siege of Yorktown in 1781, the Revolutionary War's final major battle that secured American independence. After returning to France, Lafayette became a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830 and continues to be celebrated as a hero in both France and the United States.1

The obverse design depicts the profiles of
George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.
Obverse inscriptions are
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and
LAFAYETTE DOLLAR

The United States introduced the silver dollar as part of its participation in the Paris World's Fair. It was the first and only commemorative dollar coin of that denomination to be issued in the United States. The Lafayette Dollar remained the only commemorative silver dollar piece to be struck until 1983

The reverse depicts a statue of Lafayette on horseback.
Reverse inscriptions are
ERECTED BY THE YOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES
IN HONOR OF GEN LAFAYETTE,
PARIS, and the date 1900

To thank France for having offered the United States the Statue of Liberty, an American named Robert Thompson opened a subscription to American school children to finance a monumental statue in tribute to General La Fayette, who remained famous in the United States for his participation in the war of independence.
On July 4, 1900, anniversary of American Independence, the statue is inaugurated in the Louvre, in the middle of the Napoleon’s Court (on the site of the current Pyramid). Having not had the time necessary to carry out the project, Barlett delivered for the ceremony a model in plaster, while waiting for the definitive sculpture.

I think it fitting to have Lafayette as the first Commemorative coin minted.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

I can understand why this silver dollar carries such a high premium as $949 being the only silver dollar commemorative struck by the US @silversaver888!😀
You can put this one on my Christmas wish list!😇

For one thing, it is 124 years old! The second thing is that it is the first commemorative coin ever minted. The next silver dollar commemorative coin to be minted was the 1982 George Washington 250th Anniversary Half Dollar.
It is both in yours and Liz, and my Christmas list!!!

Nice choice. I actually had a teacher in junior high who was a descendant of George Washington. Let's just say the nose gene is VERY dominant in his lineage, even in the women. 😆

A beautiful coin. I didn't know the US commemorated the gifting of the Eiffle tower with a coin. Such a historical moment

Hmmm 🤔... the only connection between the Eiffel Tower and the US is that the construction firm that won bid was owned by Gustave Eiffel, which had built the iron frame of the Statue of Liberty.
The US received as a gift from the French people the Statue of Liberty. The US gifted the French people a statue of Lafayette. Sorry!

Such a Sweet Puppy and BIG Too!

They are such misunderstood and lovely animals, that need to be protected instead of hunted down to extinction. pic.twitter.com/M5Q2u38ssv

One of my favorite commemoratives! I have one of these that I bought way back in nineties and wasn't nearly as expensive... Not a real high grade but it's such a cool coin. Great pick!
