Ketupat Sayur for Breakfast
When I was a child, my mom always made sure that her children were full before going to school. Being full means: having eaten rice or other big breakfast.
My mom used to make a big breakfast like fried rice with scrambled eggs for the whole family. Sometimes, the breakfast was bought from nearby food vendors, like nasi uduk (steamed rice cooked in coconut milk), ketupat sayur (ketupat in vegetable soup), etc.
I still do that big breakfast habit to this day. If I had a toast or salad for breakfast, a few moments later my stomach would rumble with hunger. And then I have to take another breakfast again with something eaten with rice.
One of my favorite breakfasts is ketupat sayur.
Ketupat sayur is ketupat in vegetable soup. Ketupat itself is a rice cake packed inside a diamond-shaped container of woven palm leaf pouches. How to serve: The inner rice cake is cut in pieces and served as a staple food in place of plain steamed rice. The vegetable soup consists of sliced chayote or green beans and unripe jackfruit curry in thin and spicy coconut milk soup. (Wikipedia)
This dish is commonly eaten for breakfast in Indonesia. Usually there are some topping addition such as tofu, boiled eggs, chili sauce, and crackers. But we can have a basic ketupat and vegetable soup only if we like.
This one I ate is ketupat Padang, one of the varieties of ketupat sayur that’s originally from Padang, West Sumatra. I bought it from a food vendor near my house. Some of ketupat sayur varieties are ketupat Betawi from Jakarta, kupat tahu from Bandung, tipat cantok from Bali.
Typical ketupat Padang is its pink crackers and telur balado (a boiled egg with chili sauce) for the topping. But since this is a large portion, I don't use egg, only the chili. Because if I use egg, I will be full and won't be able to finish it. I like ketupat Padang most because it tastes more thick, spicy, and savory compared to the other ketupat sayur varieties.
Beside ketupat sayur, other dishes are commonly eaten for breakfast -- and other meal time in Indonesia are:
- Bubur ayam (chicken congee)
- Nasi uduk (steamed rice cooked in coconut milk)
- Nasi goreng (fried rice)
- Gorengan (fritter)
