Christmas Afternoon And Evening Lights
Yes, Christmas.
Morning and lunch passed, and while the rest of the family rested, I drove around the city.
My intention for this evening was to go and see the festive lighting around the city, but I also thought I'd see how they've decorated the two city symbols at the entrance and exit roundabouts.
As you can see, there is not even a patch of snow, although a few centimeters fell a few days ago. The snow stayed higher up in the woods, and there was nothing in the valley. The weather is cloudy, windy, and quite dry.
The entrance roundabout from Ljubljana to Postojna is pictured. The town's symbol is a boat, galley, which is also on the flag and coat of arms.
To further detail, why a galley about 15 km from the sea?
Legend has it that the remains of a galley have been found here, which is said to date back to ancient times, namely, the ship Argo. In Greek mythology, the Argonauts were a group of heroes who accompanied Jason on the ship Argo (hence the name Argo-nauts) in the days before the Trojan War.
Pliny the Elder wrote that the Argo came down some river into the Adriatic Sea, not far from Tergeste (Trieste), and the ship was carried across the Alps on men's shoulders; the river is unknown, but maybe is river Reka near Ilirska Bistrica? But that's just a legend :) 😀
Well, the other theory is that these are the remains of a galleon of Senj Uskoks that plundered Venetian ships in the northern Adriatic and when the Venetians had enough of it, they drove them north... what do I know, but that's a daily local debate here :) 😀
I'm going to the exit roundabout, where the main road leads from Rijeka to Croatia, about eight kilometers from the border. What do we have here?
The mill wheel is another symbol of Ilirska Bistrica. Ilirska Bistrica, under Maria Theresia Illyrisch Feistritz, Villa Del Nevoso under the Italian occupation until 1945, was a town of mills and sawmills, where, with the help of water resources, timber was mainly cut to meet the needs of the surrounding inhabitants from Trieste, Rijeka, and Ljubljana.
As I mentioned, it's an exit roundabout. When they converted ordinary junctions into roundabouts about eight years ago, they put different symbols on all of them, which was a bit of a fad then.
It was not my intention to describe the history. :) 😜
But I wanted to capture these two objects, including the other decorations, under the lights in the afternoon and later in the evening.
There is nothing special in town; the same decoration is used every year. That's why I chose these symbols for today.
And now comes the central part - the decorations and the lights at night.
Galley
The mill wheel
It doesn't even look that bad a couple of hours ago.
And finally, Fairytale Land, the children's corner, was taken yesterday.
Thank you very much for your attention.

I don’t agree with the idea that there’s nothing special in town. I loved the lights and the history of the roundabouts, haha. It seems to be a common European resource, the best thing about them is that they are an opportunity to include art and history in the streets. Happy Christmas! 🎄
Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too. 🎄🧑🎄
