Beer Tasting Starvation, Petrus, and Szalon

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

Finally, a few raindrops fell - half an hour of light rain after three weeks. It was such a relief, and the smell of wet earth was invigorating. At least it cooled the heat a little. The plants in the field will be happy for at least a few days.
I am thirsty, too.
And I've got a perfect excuse for some serious binge drinking.
368 #beersaturday :) 😜

Today, I have three chilled bottles on the agenda: a Slovenian, a Hungarian, and a Belgian. Three beers from three different categories

First, I open the one with the lowest alcohol content.

🍻 😎 🍻

Pécsi Szalon 1848

Brewed by Pécsi Sörfözde, Pécs, Hungary.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 4.6% ABV, IBU 18.
It's a Pale-lager or American-lager-style beer with a grainy flavor, low bitterness, and a very dry finish.

What do the Master Brewers say?

The real beer of Pécs. This pale beer, brewed in 1848, is well-known and acknowledged in southern Trans-Danubia and throughout the country.
A refreshing, easy-drinking lager with moderate maltiness, well-balanced bitterness, and pleasant hop aroma.

🍺
Ok, but, 1848? Was this type of beer known then?

The beer is clear yellow, and the head is average and falls quickly. I do not smell any odor.
The first sip goes down the throat smoothly (the second one, too :)). On the palate, I taste a mild balance of sweetness and bitterness and hints of citrus flavor, specifically lemon.
The mild hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for a while.
I didn't have any particular expectations, but it is refreshing, not bad at all, and drinkable. It is not available here unless you order the Kalea Beer Box.

Let's move forward.

🍻 😎 🍻

Petrus Aged Pale

Brewed by De Brabandere, Harelbeke, West Flanders, Belgium.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 7.3 ABV, IBU 24.
It's a Sour or Wild Beer style, a Belgian classic. This means that yeast is used in fermentation, and microorganisms like Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, Saccharomyces, and Brettanomyces are used.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% foeder beer aged 24 months in our oak foeders. It has been the reference for sour beers for years. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used to blend with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

🍺
I have tried several Petrus beers, and they have all been good, including the sour ones, although I'm not too fond of sour beers in principle.

The beer is light yellow, and the head is solid. It has a distinct aroma of prunes.
It goes down the throat smoothly. In the mouth, I first taste the sourness, then the sweetness of the fruit. The prunes predominate, and the hop bitterness is nowhere to be found.
The sweet flavors disappear in the aftertaste, and the sourness lingers for a while.

It's a drinkable but extremely sour beer, more suited to dessert with a pastry. It's like drinking a Cyder. It has won many world awards, but I don't think it's for everyone. The average beer drinker will find it hard to accept.
I got it from the Petrus Beer Box in Lidl.

🍻 😎 🍻

Starvation Black IPA

Brewed by Reservoir Dogs, Nova Gorica, Slovenia.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 8.0 % ABV, IBU 65.
It's a Black-IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale style beer, complex, strong, very dry and hoppy, with dark fruit flavors.

What do the Master Brewers say?

The Horsemen of the Apocalypse series.
Here comes the dark beast: as black as a porter and as aromatic as a royal IPA. Starvation is a dark beer with the aroma of citruses, tropical fruit, conifers, and just a hint of roasted coffee and chocolate. It explodes with taste once it hits your mouth. It is complex yet balanced.

🍺
Apocalypse? Hopefully, it won't be too soon :)

The beer is black; the head is average and very creamy. Surprisingly, it has no smell.
The first sip goes down the throat smoothly and is very creamy. In the mouth, I taste the bitterness of the hops that dominate, the shy sweetness of the malt, the cream, the tropical fruit, and the nuances of chocolate and coffee. It is pretty intense with alcohol, but I do not feel it. Maybe later?
The bitterness of hops and coffee lingers in the aftertaste for a while.

Refreshing and drinkable. Very complex but balanced flavours of fruit, hops and malt, with a predominant bitterness. For all seasons :)
It's locally sourced so, although not cheap, a small bottle of €2.66, a sample will end up in my fridge.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beer? Something from the last #newtunes post. New Columbian band, deep in sixties.

BALTHVS - Ojos Verdes

You have a really interesting hobby, always having an excuse to drink—I mean, "taste." :) I'm not so interested in the taste, but the bottles are just crazy. I want to take pictures of these bottles. The last one, Starvation, is a perfect model :)

I checked it out already, and it doesn't help if I can't drink or take photos. Only looking at the photos just makes me nervous. ;)

There are other natural things to calm me down and help me sleep. ;) I'm going to Slovenia today, and my brother already called to tell me that he bought beers to celebrate Pogačar and his win. ;) I'm on vacation, I'm allowed to drink a little, so now, I won't be nervous looking at photos :) I'm just not sure why they love Puntigamer so much.
