Beer Tasting: Staropramen Dark and Alpirsbacher Kloster Dunkel
Hello, beer lovers! 🍻
How are you doing in these pre-holiday times? Are you preparing for the feasts and parties that await us shortly?
I am slowly stopping my activities, to be honest, I don't feel like doing anything, I would rather lie down on the sofa and rest. Unfortunately, it won't be for a few more days.
But I will have a beer. After all, today is #beersaturday, the 337th in a row.
In the fridge, I have two, admittedly small, beers of the same style waiting for me, one German and one Czech. We'll see what happens.
Let's first be the one with less alcohol!
Staropramen Dark
Brewed by Staropramen Breweries (Molson Coors), Prague, Czech Republic.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 4.4% ABV, IBU 20.
It's a Dark lager or Dunkel style, rich with bread taste, malt balanced, usually with chocolate or coffee-like flavors. Czech is more hoppy than German Dunkel.
What do the Master Brewers say?
A dark lager that brings a swirl of flavors in every velvety drop. Made according to a traditional Czech recipe with the addition of roasted malts, Staropramen Dark combines the aromatic sweetness of caramel and the bitterness of the finest hops into a superb dark lager that will satisfy everyone's taste buds. It is rich in flavor, yet very drinkable.
A perfect balance in every sense.
Staropramen is a well-known brand here, I've tried their lager and it's just fine.
The beer is dark, almost black, with little head. Maybe because it's still quite cold? It doesn't have any smell. A sip goes down the throat smoothly, and in the mouth, I taste a steady and discreet sweetness of malt and bitterness of coffee, bread, and cereal.
In the aftertaste, however, there is a hop bitterness that lasts for quite a while.
The beer is drinkable, but nothing special. All the flavors that define the style are discreet rather than pronounced. I don't feel like drinking a dark beer, well maybe, very little.
But, as I mentioned, the beer is drinkable and I could easily drink it all evening. It's not, however, an excess.
Here, it's available in all the local shops.
Let's move on!
Meme: Oktoberfest mood. Cheers! :)
Alpirsbacher Kloster Dunkel
Brewed by Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu, Alpirsbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.2% ABV, IBU 20.
It's the same style as previous, Dark lager or Dunkel, rich in malt, with chocočate or coffee flavors. German is less hoppy than Czech.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Brewing culture with a confident charisma. Creamy. Malty. Unique.
Chestnut-colored with a crystal-clear appearance and firm foam. Aromatic malt aromas with light roasted and caramel flavors and hints of nuts and dried berries. The first sip is soft and effervescent with a slight sweetness, reminiscent of dark chocolate. This is followed by a restrained bitterness that ends in a malty finish.
I don't know this brewery. My first encounter with it.
The beer is dark brown in color, the head is considerable and creamy. It smells like roasted malt. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly and I taste a slight sweetness of malt, bread, prunes, discreet aromas of caramel, and bitter chocolate. I don't detect any hops.
The bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for a while.
Drinkable and tasty. Balanced, and slightly sweet, I didn't taste any hop bitterness, but the bitter chocolate provided it.
Still quite okay but I've tasted better Dark lagers. I like it better than the previous one because it has more pronounced flavors, but this one is also not an overachiever.
Not available here unless you get it from Kalea Beer Box.
And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beer? Nothing from my #newtunes post yesterday.
I'm listening to the best skater between musicians, his album from eight years ago.

Oh, poor you! Staropramen is sooo bad compared to craft beers you can get anywhere here in the Czech Republic ;)
Yes, I know, but every now and then I have to go to a shop and see what's on offer. It's indeed nothing special. Next time I'm in the Czech Republic, I'll definitely choose something better.
