Beer Tasting: Genije, Schlapeseppel, Amarillo & Citra
Hello, beer lovers! 🍻
The end of the year is fast approaching, and #beersaturday 391 is my last post in this community.
That doesn't mean I won't be drinking beer for the rest of the year; of course, I will (no doubt about that 😅). I wish everyone a Happy New Year 2025 and many more beer posts in the Beer Community.
And don't forget your health; every good thing, if consumed too much, is bad :)
Today, I have two cans, one Croatian, one Danish, and one German bottle. Although I am late because we have been out all day with the family, I will take the time to try them all. Well, there was no compulsion. I always combine the pleasant with the useful, aka dulce and utile.
We go in order, and as the law of the beer knights dictates, we start with less alcohol.
Genije SIPA
Brewed by The Garden Brewery, Zagreb, Croatia, for Spar Croatia.
Can, 0.44 l, alcohol 4.2% ABV, IBU 24.
Session IPA or SIPA is a take on the standard hop-dominant American IPA with American hop varieties but with lower alcohol.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Beer with ananas and citrus aroma. Made for Spar Croatia.
🍺
They didn't say much, but I've tasted a few beers from this brewery, and they were good.
The beer is golden, with an average head, and smells of tropical fruits. It goes down the throat smoothly, bitter but not very pronounced on the palate and flavors of pineapple and citrus. It is slightly watery.
In the aftertaste, everything disappears quickly, including the bitterness.
The beer is drinkable and refreshing. It is a solid session IPA without any excesses. Its lower alcohol content makes it ideal for battling the summer heat at the beach. It is unavailable here, but only in Spar Croatia, so I will probably get it again.
And now to Bavaria!
Schlapeseppel Export
Brewed by Eder & Heylands Brauerei, Großostheim, Bavaria, Germany.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.6% ABV, IBU 19.
Helles or Dortmunder Export bier is a clean and malty German Pale Lager with a smooth, grainy, malty flavor and floral or herbal hops aroma.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Being a genuine Bavarian type of beer it distinguishes from all “Lager beers” and the usual “Bavarian light beer” through its full-bodied, malt-flavoured and characteristic taste.
One particularity of Schlappeseppel Export is the use of “aromatic hops” incorporating all the sense of taste and smell harmonically.
Silver medal at the World-Beer-Cup 2002. Contains: water, barley malt, hops, hop extract. Brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law from 1516.
🍺
The beer is clear golden, with an average head that settles quickly. It has no particular odor. It goes down the throat smoothly, dominated by the sweetness of the malt and the taste of bread and biscuits, with a slight bitterness and subtle herbal aromas.
Only in the aftertaste, when everything else has disappeared, does a slight bitterness emerge.
The beer is drinkable and refreshing. It is a classic Helles to me, without any excesses but just fine for drinking. It's unavailable here, except occasionally, in the Kalea BeerBox in Hofer and Lidl stores.
And finally, Danish beer.
Ugly Duck Amarillo & Citra IPA
Brewed by Indslev Bryggeri / Ugly Duck Brewing Co., Nr. Aaby, Denmark.
Can, 0.44 l, alcohol 5.9% ABV, IBU 50.
It's an Indian Pale Ale (IPA) style beer that is hop-forward and bitter, usually with citrus and fruit aromas.
What do the Master Brewers say?
IPA - Amarillo & Citra. We love hops, it's as simple as that!
A smooth and well balanced IPA. A beautiful combination of both late and dry hops, Amarillo and Citra. Built on a fresh golden coloured malty background. Danish Novelty Beer of the Year 2013. Hope you like it!
🍺
The beer is cloudy golden, with an average head that disappears quickly. It smells of tropical fruits. The sip goes down the throat smoothly. The hops' bitterness immediately dominates the palate, with slight hints of citrus and mango throughout. The sweetness of the malt is also present but very minimally.
In the aftertaste, an assertive bitterness remains for quite some time.
The beer is drinkable and refreshing. It's a basic IPA with a punchy bitterness, but the fruity notes are not pronounced enough for me. Which doesn't mean I wouldn't drink another :)
It's unavailable here. I bought it in a Danish shop a while ago, and I don't think I'll see it again. I may go to Denmark next year, but they have a huge selection of beers there...
And what am I listening to when tasting beers and writing this review? Something from yesterday's Seckorama #newtunes post. New Tricky project - Theis Thaws.
