Beer Tasting: First Chop POD & Fruitpocalypse Now!

avatar

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

It's raining and blowing outside, so I have no desire to move around the wet and windy meadows and forests. Yes, it is not appropriate to be outside here at the moment unless there is something urgent.

There is nothing urgent that I have to do. I'm going to make the most of this time, get off somewhere on my own, and have a #beersaturday, 347 in a row.

I have two small cans waiting for me, suitably chilled, one English, one Slovenian, and I'll be happy to open them.

First the one with less alcohol.

🍻 😎 🍻

First Chop POD Vanilla Stout

Brewed by First Chop Brewery, Eccles, Greater Manchester, England.
Can, 0.33 l, alcohol 4.2% ABV, IBU N/A.
It's a Stout-style beer, a dark beer with a pronounced roasted flavor like coffee or dark chocolate.

What do the Master Brewers say?

POD is a smooth and approachable stout infused with the irresistible flavor of Madagascan vanilla. This indulgent session beer offers a perfect balance of rich chocolate malts and velvety vanilla, creating an indulgent and satisfying drinking experience. With its smooth and creamy texture, POD is a true delight for stout lovers. Like all our beers, it's crafted to be gluten-free and vegan.

I don't know this brewery, but I've been seeing a lot of gluten-free beers lately, and this is the first one I'm going to taste.

The beer is black, the head is strong, creamy, and persistent, and it has no odor. It goes down the throat smoothly, but in the mouth, I taste the bitterness of roasted malt, the taste of bitter chocolate and coffee.
And maybe a discreet hint of vanilla, which gives a little sweetness. But very minimal.
The bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for quite a while.

The beer is drinkable, of course, with the luxurious bitterness of coffee and chocolate. But I miss the stronger vanilla flavor because it is hardly perceptible.
Well, for stout lovers, it will be quite an OK beer.
It's available here in E-Leclerc stores, but I don't think my fridge will see it anymore.

🍻 😎 🍻

Since the weather was so shitty that I didn't go anywhere, I had a little wander around the beer memes.

Fruitpocalypse NOW! Modern APA

Brewed by Lobik Craft Brewery, Ruše, Slovenia.
Can, 0.33 l, alcohol 6.2% ABV, IBU N/A.
It's an American Pale Ale (APA) style, golden in color, hoppy and fruity.

What do the Master Brewers say?

This modern American Pale Ale is distinctive for its intense fruity and tropical aromas, mainly consisting of melon, grapefruit, and passion fruit. The rich aroma also develops on the palate. Despite its modern bitterness, its body is so opaque that you will think you have poured yourself a glass of orange juice. New American hops and the addition of oat flakes turn this beer into a modern classic. Fruitpocalypse Now is Slovenia's top-rated Pale Ale.
Hops: Citra, Mosaic.

Lobik beers are highly appreciated in Slovenia. I believe this one is no different.

The beer is slightly cloudy, and golden in color, the head is significant, creamy, and persistent. It smells of tropical fruits. The sip goes down the throat smoothly, slightly spicy, and the bitterness of the hops is predominant, I can also taste the sweetness of the malt but less so. The mouth is filled with tropical fruit aromas, especially grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and orange.

In the aftertaste, all the fruity aromas disappear, but the strong hop bitterness remains for a while.

A very tasty and drinkable beer. It doesn't have the pronounced bitterness of an IPA, the malt sweetness is present and the exotic fruit flavours make me want to take a sip :)
The flavors and aromas are very well balanced, at least for my taste. Since it's locally sourced, a can (or two, or more 😜), although it's one of the more expensive ones here (€2.85) will reign in my fridge for a while.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beers? Something from yesterday's #newtunes post.
A new name for me, a great trio, a concert recording from Eurosonic 2023.

I enjoy bitter beers, but it's always refreshing to try some with slight sweet notes.

Being a big fan of classic movies and IPA, I think I would love to sample the Fruitpocalypse NOW! I do enjoy a good flavoured stout but it doesn't thrill me like a bold, sweet and bitter IPA.

They are definitely getting expensive these days. Good thing you are a globally-renowned !BEER blogger and the rewards from your legions of followers finance the good stuff! ;)

I'm sure you would love to drink it. The only comment you would have is that it is only a small can. 😜🍻 !BEER

While I am partial to the pint cans, I do love having shorties in the fridge for that time when a full pint is a few sips too many for the moment!
