EL PESEBRE DE MI ABUELA /MY GRANDMA'S MENGER My entry To Ladies of Hive Community Contest #59 (Spa - Eng)

In my family the tradition that most marked our Christmases was that of the manger. That sweet invention of the portal, manger or "birth" originated in the initiative of Saint Francis of Assisi to represent through a living painting the arrival of the Child God and that later it was changed to be represented with figurines of various materials.

When I was a child in my aunts' house they made mangers, in each house, but "the" manger was the one in my grandmother's house. Family rehearsals began in October with my uncle Alejandro, a musician by nature, who played by ear guitar, four, three and composed some beautiful Christmas carols. Every year he composed new Christmas carols that increased our repertoire for when we went to sing to the Child on Christmas night.

On the night of December 14, my aunt Maria would lock herself in the living room, no one was allowed to enter it, it was her personal Christmas vigil, the night that she would spend totally without sleep to make a large, beautiful, original nativity scene, always better than the one we had so admired the year before.

The whole family was expectant and on the 15th they all came to my grandmother house (whom my brothers and I called "big mom") to see what was special about the manger that year.

There was a year when the novelty had been that my aunt had made all the figures out of cloth (except Saint Joseph, the Virgin and the Child). It had taken a whole year to secretly sew to achieve that wonder where even the sheep were made of cloth. At that time I would be between six or seven years old. I remember that one of the little figures made by my aunt Maria was that of a drunkard, sitting on the ground, leaning against a palm tree, hugging a tiny glass bottle. that my aunt had managed to get I don't know where.

On the night of the 24th we all went to Grandma's house. When the adults came to eat dulce de leche (papaya), drink liquor while dancing to the music from the radio, it was not possible to play records because the Child had not yet been born. The adults drank, talked, laughed. The little ones enjoyed the reunion with our cousins and played running around until it was close to midnight.

At twelve o'clock we all gathered in front of the vast manger. My uncle Alejandro played the Cuatro, my aunt María played the maracas and my aunt Ana and my aunt Amanda played the rattles. Some rather rudimentary percussion instruments, homemade, consisting of wooden sticks in which plates (metal lids) of soft drinks (sodas) that had been flattened with hammer were nailed.

We sang traditional Christmas carols and those of my uncle Alejandro. A solemn moment was the one in which we were all silent because my aunt Ana and my aunt Maria would sing the Adeste Fidelis together in Latin! I looked at them with respectful silence, admiring them for the beauty of their voices and because they sang in Latin! At the end of the repertoire of songs, it was time to run to Mamagrande's room since it was on her bed that the Child Jesus had brought us the toys. And our parents, by some Christmas gadget, perhaps by osmosis they knew what gift belonged to each one and they even directed us.

From there we would go out to the Christmas dinner (Hallacas, ham bread, papaya sweet (papaya), crena punch, panettone, and after dinner the children to play with nu\ew toys, the adults to drink beer, sparkling wine and put (now yes) the records to dance the night away.

Now that my grandmother has died and my uncles have died, the family has grown a little apart, and with this diaspora abroad, the family is becoming less numerous. I miss those days full of magic and love.

Lady of Las Mercedes located in the Las Mercedes sector, in Villa de Cura, Aragua state, Venezuela,

An inspiring contest that allowed me to mentally connect with that lovely time when my grandmother and all my uncles were still alive. I am grateful for it. Thanks, @elizabethbit, for the pleasant visit.

I may have some color lights up in front of my house but Inside, the Nativity is always put up first before anything else.

Thanks for sharing a family Christmas tradition @sayury
