King Kong (1933) - A relic of classic cinema (Minor Spoilers)
Hey guys from Movies & TV Shows, I hope you are all doing great. The original version of King Kong is a cinema classic I was curious to watch since a couple of years ago, because I’m a person who enjoys watching movies from different eras. So here is my opinion about it.
To start, I will not focus on explaining the plot of this movie, mainly because it already has so many versions that tell the same thing and because of how famous this iconic monster protagonist is that everyone must already be familiar with him in some way. Anyway, this original version was shown almost 90 years ago, so it has the typical clichés of the movies from this time and the characters are simple; personally this doesn’t bother me since I’m aware this movie’s time of release was very different from today’s world.
It’s worth mentioning that the plot of this movie develops at a slower rhythm than any movie from today, and from my point of view, is very well told from the beginning to the end, specially because it knows really well how to reveal the most interesting details, it never becomes tedious or boring.
When it comes to the first act, I think this movie creates a fascinating atmosphere of mystery, specially because not too much important information is revealed about the place the characters are visiting or what they will find there, they are mainly curious or disquiet about this place they are traveling to, until it reaches a point where a legend about a deity is mentioned, this being lives in this unknown island, and this part marks about half of the length of the film.
Then, during the second act, the moments that take place are the ones that surprised me the most of the whole movie, throughout these parts there’s so much to see and appreciate. To begin with, the suspense level in the scene where the monster is shown for the first time is very well constructed, before the great ape appears the sound of loud drums music and growls in the background can be heard, at the same time we are shown how expectant before the unknown the protagonists are.
Like this, the scenes that take place in the jungle where amazing and is just that the animation of all the creatures made using the stop motion technique and the level of details, the variety of the sceneries, all these combined made me think of the amazing creativity and genius of the makers of this movie. Watching the landscapes with mountains, a great waterfall, a giant cavern or a big lake filled with fog, I couldn’t avoid thinking about how many of these sceneries would make a great piece in an art gallery.
The third act is less spectacular but it still has its moments. I think the scene where the monster is shown in the city causing chaos and destruction and the terror during its rampage develops quite nicely without going overkill. Besides, I have to say even though I already knew the end of this story because of the newer versions, I still felt sad about the tragic end of this iconic character, who was taken by force from his habitat by an unscrupulous man whose only desire was to use him as entertainment, I saw it as a very interesting social criticism about attractions that involve wild animals that you can see in some circuses.
In conclusion, even though this is a very old film, I still liked it more than the other newer versions I’ve seen and I can’t help but focus on the magic of its visuals that in my opinion is lacking in the other versions of the story, this experience was like a fascinating film history class.
Anyway, this is all I have to say guys. Thank you very much for stopping by and supporting my post if you liked it!
