Value and Ranking System in Indonesian schools
In my opinion, ranking in school is a dilemma. Indonesia's education system and way of life have not fully seen individual abilities.
First, let's look at the goals of education in general and their implications for value and ranking systems. The purpose of education is to know what is not known and understand what is already known. Educational institutions must be a place to enlighten society. Inside the building, which is commonly called the school, should contain individuals who are motivated to know why the sky is blue, why the wheel is round, why there are different religions in the world. Now, to set goals about how much a person achieves his understanding and is motivated to find out more, numbers are used. That number is a unit of understanding how each individual processes.
Second, let's look at the Indonesian education system and the negative impact numbers have on individuals. One of the shortcomings of numbers in education, making it an absolute unit of individual understanding. Other aspects such as the psychological effect of taking the test were not included. The Indonesian education system also defines “skills” in numeracy (mathematics), science IPA (Natural Science. and IPS(Social science) , and languages (Indonesian and English). Gradually, society labeled individuals with low scores in the above subjects as stupid. This is very unfortunate because the ability of each individual is very different. There are individuals with musical abilities, dancing, magic, drawing, singing, oration, etc. In short, we can't judge a fish by the way it flies. The treatment of stupid individuals in the education unit is also different from individuals who are called smart. How does it feel to be hit with negative names from all walks of life including family every day for maybe 15 years?
This negative effect turns the goal of education from an enlightening place to a numerical scourge. Education becomes an institution to pursue figures that are justified through cheating, corruption, and fear. Take a look, a small child at the playgroup/kindergarten level will ask “Why is the sky blue?” and “why is this called red?”, but in middle and high school, teachers will ask, “Is there a question?”. This shows something is wrong with our education system, there is a treatment that turns children's curiosity into adult silence.
Three, the influence of numbers on a person's adult life. Again, numbers become objective units. At the job acceptance rate, for example, numbers are one way to reduce nepotism. Numbers can also be used to determine the development of a person's understanding. As far as research goes, the education rate is also relatively the same as a person's IQ level.
Suggestion, to your child, if they are having difficulty in a subject which the government calls an “indicator of intelligence”, please be very firm, don't use it as the only indicator of someone's ability. Your child is great in all his abilities. Encourage them to become a better person with existing abilities. Thank you have a nice day!
