February Homeschool Miscellany
After ending January on a high, I was looking forward to finding more expensive excursions that the kids would be interested in and working out what cheaper or free things I could sprinkle in between.
And then vaccine mandates dropped which basically meant we weren't "allowed" to do much of anything. Fortunately the kids were still "allowed" to go to gymnastics and TAFE, and in that time 17yo managed to regain his backflip (he had it last year, then lost it in the second half of the year), and on the same night got the double.. I recorded a couple but could only blog one where I missed the leading roundoff but caught a great stack at the end (he'd done quite a few by that point) because in the full length one I got there was another child floating around in the background.
On one of his runs his friend and I thought that he was going to go for the third, and when we mentioned it he decided to try it and got the triple (which I did also get a video of but can't use because there's a child in the background, and in true friend fashion his friend proudly screamed "YOU SUCK!" at him when he nailed it).
Meanwhile I scrambled a bit trying to figure out what else we would still be "allowed" to do and in the end decided it could be a later problem as we worked on settling 17yo into TAFE, which is the first time he's attended an educational institution in his entire life. The plan was to drop him off and pick him up in the first week and then support taking public transport (I was going to go with him on the first trip or so and leave him to it when he felt more confident). For various reasons the rides continued, and then it worked out that I could take him on one of the days as I could then keep going to a friend that I do massage work on after, and we would work out the buses soon, and then we all got covid symptoms and have been stuck at home.
Ironically (because I was pretty sure it was just a cold from how mild the symptoms are, and everything is a covid symptom) it may have actually been covid, it persisted way too long (at least for me, 2 days for a cold is too long, and while I have had bad flus in the past which have lasted 2-3 weeks, for the most part even a flu lasts a week tops) and there were way too many weird symptoms that we don't normally get with colds present, plus the wtf timing (it's not unusual for something to get picked up in winter but generally not when it's warm). Just in case other people get as concerned as some of my friends and family did, if it was actually covid, we got the nothing version, the most annoying thing was staying home.
Aside from that minor setback 17yo seems to be enjoying TAFE and has made a couple of friends. His current complaint is finding the work too easy and feeling bad about finishing an hour early. I told him that as long as he's getting everything right and doing it well, there's no problem there and he should enjoy the cruise while he can as when he gets into the course he wants to get into, it might be a lot harder and a lot more involved. And now the only thing I'm trying to get him to do is to communicate with staff and not cram as he currently plans to catch up by using the "extra" time he has during class to catch up on work he hasn't been doing while home because he can't get the cloud files working from home for some reason. But I guess some things need to be learned the hard way.
On a pure technicality 17yo is no longer registered for homeschooling so I technically don't even need to be reporting for him anymore, the TAFE course he's doing is considered "full time" which satisfies the Education Department's requirement for education. The continued updates are partly to show a possible path for home educators who are looking for "what it looks like" over "how it's done" and mostly because I had at some point made a decision to blog about it til they "graduated"/turned 18.
15yo decided to get her bake on and made and decorated a couple of chocolate cakes (one of which got carved into a heart and iced) and chocolate cupcakes on different days quite close to each other.
They were delicious and did not last long.
12yo meanwhile tried his hand at a cinnamon scroll and didn't quite put enough flour in.
It was still pretty good but due to the size (had I known there was a smaller one concealed under the tea towel when i looked I would have grabbed that one instead) I felt like I never needed to eat again afterwards.
12yo then decided he wanted to try his hand at making charsiu pao. He found some recipes online and then he and J made a trip out (and combined it with a top up shop which needed to be done soon anyway) to get the ingredients that were missing, and didn't bother with the red food colouring when we found out we didn't have any.
It came out both looking and tasting amazing.
Some was put aside for our 2min noodle soups and a stirfry that was had for dinner the following night, the rest went into the pao mix. The dough was made with possibly a bit too much wholemeal flour so it wasn't white but it was still good.
These were steamed and also didn't last long (above photo was mine before it got nommed). He's looking forward to making the next batch whenever we get another chunk of meat to make another batch with.
15yo asked me about getting into uni. On finding out that she wanted to do do early childhood, I asked her (specifying that I was purely curious and not judging her choice in any way, shape or form) why she was choosing uni rather than TAFE. Indicating having done some research into this, she quite confidently replied that uni degrees are more highly rated/prestigious than TAFE diplomas so the job prospects were better, and having looked into the courses at multiple unis, she was wanting to attend the uni that Sprat and I had gone to (I said that that was the best one and that I thought that because I'm completely and utterly biased, but that the other one she had been looking at was closer) because the "early learning" course there apparently covers the entirety of primary school along with babies and toddlers which excited her.
I did not have the wit to express how impressed I was with how much thought she's put into this. What I could do after having gone through this with 17yo already was tell her that her options were going the traditional route and going to school and doing the exams to get the entrance scores (something she didn't seem that keen on given her last school experience), waiting til she was 18 and applying as a mature age student, or going to TAFE and doing most if not all of the Cert III in Early Childhood Education and Care and then using that as RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) to get into the relevant course at uni.
Running under the assumption that she will have to do the same course 17yo is currently doing to qualify, I tried emailing the TAFE to find out if she will be able to do it next semester if she wants. I tried to keep it short knowing that reception of anywhere tends to be busy but I think they focused on the wrong bit of the email and gave us an info dump about the course instead of answering the question, so I'll drop in next week when dropping 17yo off before doing my round.
This post also appears on my blog.

Thanks for looking! ^_^
Come hang out on Discord with us!
They look very tasty! id eat those in like 10 seconds.
Which one? Or all of it? :D They were all very tasty XD
Most likely all of them.
Wise choice XD though I would be concerned if I watched you somehow eat all of them in 10 seconds XD
Loved the backflips and the cheer at the end! Haha!
Are you all feeling better? No continued weird symptoms?
I don't actually know if I've had it or not... I've had one phone call to say I was in close proximity to someone who tested positive, and I had some symptoms that week, but like you don't know if that was Covid, a cold, hypochondriac-ing or allergies. My partner was completely fine. Otherwise we haven't had it and might be the only ones around us... pretty much everyone we know has had the mild version in the last 2 months. I'm going to be working remote for the next 6 months but my partner will go back into the office early May.
I don't know if the kids read your blog on Hive... but do you think 15 is right about the job prospects being better from Uni versus TAFE in her chosen field? I know I wouldn't have gotten my first and second jobs without my Uni degree, it was a requirement of getting the interviews even though no one asked me anything about it and I 100% learnt more in 2 months of my first job than 4 years at Uni... but I'm also sure I wouldn't have been able to learn so much without having the basics locked in... but I'm hoping these days recruiters/interviews care more about what you've done versus where you were educated... maybe?
We've been fine for a while, the waiting til after the weekend is purely for everyone else's benefit (and partly because I don't feel/notice/ignore some things). Kids wanted to go back to gym, told them they had to wait til next week. We're not sure if youngest was affected (he coughed a little bit on occasion but didn't report other symptoms like the older two, and J wasn't affected either, he did have a headache which he asprined and may have been as much to do with staring at a screen all day as anything else).
They don't read either of the blogs as far as I'm aware. If she goes the TAFE route it's a traineeship so she'll be doing coursework plus practical in the field kinda stuff...assuming she actually can/is "allowed" to because vaccine mandates. So either way she should be able to get a job, she just thinks she has a better chance of more desirable jobs (whatever that may mean for her at the time) with the more prestigious looking qualification.
Whether a given degree helps or not would depend on what it is and what you're using it for I guess? You clearly needed yours and J definitely needed his. I didn't end up needing mine for any of the (related) jobs I did, but a couple of friends who got the same degree found that theirs did help landing jobs.
I don't think either of the bigs are going to have too much trouble in the industries they're looking at, it seems like both were struggling to get people in or staying in even before the stupid mandates made everything worse.
Ahhhh, that's a good point I hadn't thought of... any industry that really needs people isn't going to worry about the prestige of the degree and any industry that has lots of people interested will look at the prestige as a way to help make decisions.
I hope in IT interviews go more from "which uni/degree" to "show us what you've built" but I guess we'll seeeeeeee.
I feel like IT might be one of those things where "what have you done before" might be slightly more useful than "what uni/degree" XD
Blessings @ryivhnn , Those chocolate cakes look super delicious , in my house when we prepare some cake for my child it disappears from the fridge very fast. I'm going to prepare some cakes to enjoy with my family.
Happy afternoon!!!
They were super delicious!
I'm not surprised that cake disappears fast from your fridge too XD
Enjoy your cakes and your family time!
That meat looks amazing!!
The meat was amazing :D
Gonna have a crack? :)
That looks absolutely fabulous! I must try making that too.
Well done on 17yo regaining his back flip and there is nothing wrong with being smarter and finishing earlier each day. More time for fun things or learning 🤣
Try it and tell us how it all worked out :D
I may or may not catch it because I've been rubbish at keeping up with my feeds lately x_x
I don't know if it's because he's currently still underage or whether it's because TAFE is different to how I remember uni being, but I don't think he can just leave when he's finished all of his work. From what he's told me about the friends he's made I like to pretend that they all help each other when trouble arises.
Nice story as always. By the way, I love the food too (especially the cupcakes), Good evening!
Thanks :) The cupcakes were impressive (she's getting better at decorating) and also delicious :D
You're welcome (^_^)
ayyy but what dishes. and I got hungry!
Greetings
LoL! Hope you had something just as delicious :D
Oh those pesky backflips. They come and go as they please. Loved the video with that collapse recover at the end! 😆 So glad he could carry on training. It's actually a little sad to realise this was the age Izzy ended up finishing gymnastics due to her back and was no longer doing backflips. Ironically she could do backsaults instead. I'm the only one sad about her quitting, though, she has zero regrets. 🙃
Don't you just love it when an email doesn't get you the answer you're after! This is precisely my argument as to why we need to keep options to speak with real people directly, instead of turning everything over to bring some online. While I don't like talking to people much and dying straight forward things online is preferable, sometimes you've just got to talk to someone in person or on the phone.
PS: is there a trick to getting your offspring interested in cooking stuff more regularly. It only seems to happen a few times a year with mine.
Only when you're learning them XD I'm hoping he didn't lose them again in the couple of weeks he had off training x_x 15yo's ones are pretty set now but unlike 17yo she likes to warm hers up (roundoff, roundoff flip, roundoff flip+) whereas 17yo will warm up if he's supposed to warm up but otherwise just likes to chuck it now.
Back saults don't require so much arch backwards (just the initial glance and then you're curling or straightening) so they're probably easier on her back. 15yo has been complaining about her back and hips as well :< she doesn't want to quit (which is fine), but she decided that she did want to do once a week after all AFTER we'd paid term fees for twice a week because she was quite sure that she wanted to do twice a week when we asked.
I hate phones so I will just drop in next time I drop 17yo off XD I was more amused as I know how busy reception places like that can get so I kept it really short and simple and they just focused on the wrong piece of information (I guess they're more used to getting course inquiries despite that information being relatively easily searchable on the website and not so much age inquiries XD).
if it's any consolation only youngest is regularly interested in cooking and actively wants to cook family meals. 15yo refuses to cook family meals despite being cajoled into helping because she's the fussiest of the lot and is often having alternate dinners because she doesn't like what's on offer but will happily bake or make snacks as the mood takees her, and is equally happy to make them for others as well (she will usually do the rounds and ask who wants some when making something). 17yo is constantly too busy being on his computer, but is at least capable of the basics (making his own meals).
Sounds like Pixie has the right approach, especially if she's having back problems. They wouldn't have been able to get away without warming up at Izzy's gym. Tell Pixie to take care of that back. We had hours of chiro and physio for Izzy and even after she stopped gym it took months to come good. Over a year on and she'd still have things set it off, albeit not so badly. I only had complaints from her around that time of month now, so 🤞
It's definitely the right approach, I just wish she'd made that decision BEFORE we paid, because we don't have money to just not care that someone randomly changed their mind about something ^_^;
I work on her back and hips at least once a week, when it was really bad it was every day and at one stage a couple of times on a couple of days, she hasn't been asking me as much so I guess it's coming good now.
Hope Izzy's back has actually come good and doesn't give her any more problems. That time of month is at least normal for that problem x_x
Ah yes, daily back massages. I used to do that for my eldest too when she did rhythmic. Different issues for her, though.
